This is a contractual research award for independent research provided by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India. At IIT Kanpur, I worked on various aspects of controlled atom-photon interactions. Some of the important highlights of this project are❋ Interplay of classical and quantum dynamics in a thermal ensemble of atomsWe experimentally explore how the evolution of quantum superposition competes with classical dynamics of optical pumping and atomic diffusion in a thermal ensemble of atoms driven by coherent field, using a stroboscopic probing technique.❋ Probing, quantifying and engineering coherence in hot atomsWe have proposed a novel technique to probe and quantify coherence in an ensemble of room temperature atoms, along with different examples where the quantifier compares experimentally simulated open, close and incoherent systems, shows transition from EIT to Autler-Townes splitting regime, and phase coherently control and compensate for decoherence. ❋Generation of on-demand photonsWe also have a cigar shaped cloud of a million cold Rb atoms at 100 micro-Kelvin temperature. We prepare the atoms in a collective state and use a standard four-wave mixing (DLCZ) technique to generate correlated photons. We measured second order correlation (g2) upto 40. All these works involved LabVIEW based data acquisition, and developing efficient methods to understand/analyze complex experimental data, along with computational modeling and statistical analysis in MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, etc. I also worked on building and experimenting on a range of instruments including external-cavity-diode lasers, feedback locking schemes, detectors, current amplifiers, switches, controllers and FPGA programming. This was a short term research visit where I worked on designing a LabView based acquisition software for fiber based multi-photon microscope.
Graduate Research Fellow
During my graduate tenure, I worked on designing strategies based on optical coherence and interference to obtain control of light-matter interaction, along with numerical/analytical simulations, data aggregation and analysis resulting in nine publications, and eight conference presentation. Some of the important research highlights of my work are• Theoretical developments for coherent laser-atom interactions in multi-level atomic systems.• Study of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) in atomic systems.• Investigations on the effect of permanent dipole moment on the coherent dynamics of molecular systems.• Study of amplification without inversion in atomic systems.• Investigations on the effect of laser phase fluctuations on the coherent response of atomic systems.• Exploratory investigations on the realization of negative refractive index in coherently driven atomic and molecular systems.• Study of Kerr nonlinearity and spontaneously generated coherence.• Pump-probe spectroscopy experiments in rubidium atoms.
