  • Nasa Ames Research Center
Research Assistant (Contract Through San Jose State University)
Nasa Ames Research Center May 1991 - Feb 1993
    Moffett Field, California, Us
Assisted Dr. Joan Vernikos, endocrine pharmacologist and Acting Director of Space Life Sciences (Code SL) at ARC, in the study of various invasive and non-invasive countermeasures to bedrest-induced syncope (fainting). Bedrest-induced syncope was used as an analogue for microgravity-induced syncope upon re-exposure to a 1-gravity environment (i.e., landing on earth after some length of time in space). Worked closely with Dr. Vernikos and Dee O'Hara (Army nurse and bedrest facility manager) to set up and execute studies, as well as collect and analyze data. Assisted Dr. Vernikos in the preparation of papers and slides for various journals and presentations. Experiments involved subjects staying at the bedrest facility at ARC for several days to several weeks, depending on the study. Subjects were periodically exposed to one of several interventions (e.g., diuretic synthetic hormone, salt pill, or walking on a treadmill for a certain length of time). After some period of time, the subjects were then placed on a "tilt table", designed to take a subject from a supine to an inclined state in a controlled manner. Heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and a blood sample were taken in the supine state, after which subject would be tilted up and a dye would be injected into their blood stream. Five and fifteen minutes later blood samples would be taken again to measure the velocity of dye distribution, as well as heart rate, respiration and blood pressure.

Research Assistant (Contract Through San Jose State University)
Nasa Ames Research Center Oct 1989 - May 1991
    Moffett Field, California, Us
Assisted Dr. Patricia Cowings, biopsychologist, on the effectiveness and impact of biofeedback training on Space Motion Sickness (SMS), as an alternative to invasive SMS-countermeasures. Assigned to shuttle mission STS-47 (aka Spacelab J), a joint American-Japanese research mission. Worked with American and Japanese crew members, including first African-American woman in space (Dr. Mae Jemison), first Japanese astronaut in space (Dr. Mamoru Mohri), and first married couple in space (Commander Mark Lee and Dr. Jan Davis). Worked closely with Dr. Cowings, supervising research assistant team, conducting experiments/training, and assorted other lab-related tasks. Experimental training involved placing subjects on a chair spinning at 6 RPMs for 5 minutes, then increasing to 8 RPMs for another 5 minutes, and so on, until reaching 30 RPMs, some 90 minutes later. Initial exposure indicated level of susceptibility to motion sickness. Next 3 weeks were used to teach subject to use auditory (tones) and visual (a watch with wavelengths) feedback to control motion sickness symptoms. A spinning chair test was conducted weekly to indicate progress. Physiological parameters measured included: heart rate, blood volume pulse, respiration, skin conductance (sweating), muscle tenseness, and head movement.
