Director Of Strategic Campaigns

Amalgamated Transit Union

Washington Dc

Hired by the International President to create a Strategic Campaigns Department for the ATU, including an extensive rebuild the ATU Research Department. Major achievements of the department over two years included:1. Consolidating wage and benefit data for over 470 ATU and other collective bargaining agreements in a single, readily searchable database that is now the most comprehensive source of information on this in the industry. This resource allows the union to prepare the 260 ATU locals for contract bargaining and to analyze public-private, regional, and submarket patterns in wages and benefits for bus operators and related crafts.2. Mapping the extent of private contracting in the urban mass transit industry. Project included collecting over 100 revenue contracts between public agencies and private transit, paratransit and student transportation providers and entering contract details and union status into a strategic research database to inform collective bargaining and strategic new member organizing.3. Coordinating two successful contract campaigns. Shuttle drivers at University of Alabama who had been stalled for a year in first contract negotiations with multinational FirstGroup cooperated with student supporters and secured a 14% first-year raise; Greyhound drivers in Eastern Canada preserved the last defined-benefit pension in the Greyhound system despite an attempted employer lockout.4. Working with International Union Executive Officers to draw up union strategic plan for ATU contract campaigns and new member organizing targets.5. Recruiting, training and supervising staff of two researchers and one field-based internal organizer/strategic campaigner.6.
