I am a Senior Lecturer in Environmental and Civil Engineering with a passion for advancing sustainable practices in the construction industry. My career spans both academia and industry, where I've gained valuable insights into environmental assessment, carbon accounting and contaminated land risk assessment. Research My research journey began at Queen's University Belfast in 2004, where I have explored topics in environmental engineering and sustainable construction. I specialise in:• Whole life carbon accounting in construction for minimising embodied and user greenhouse gas emissions.• Environmental assessment, including life cycle assessment, to evaluate the impacts of novel concrete products.• Risk assessment of contaminated sites, employing bioaccessibility testing and distinguishing between geogenic and anthropogenic sources of contamination.• Remediation of carbon disulphide soil and groundwater contamination.Teaching I am committed to shaping the next generation of engineers by integrating sustainable development and environmental engineering into Civil Engineering programs. My teaching portfolio includes:• Civil Engineering in a Changing Environment (CIV3067, 20 CATS Points): I developed this new module, first offered to 3rd year Civil Engineering students in 2021-2022, to equip students with the knowledge needed to navigate the climate emergency. This module includes an introduction to whole life carbon assessment, the life cycle impacts of materials, measurement of whole life carbon in construction and carbon reduction strategies for buildings and infrastructure.• Design and Communications 4 (CIV4012, 40 CATS Points): I advise final year MEng Civil Engineering students on the environmental and sustainability aspects of their designs, including whole life carbon analysis and reduction.• Assessment of Environmental Impacts (CIV4039/7059 20 CATS points). Until 2019 I taught environmental impact assessment to final year MEng students and applied this in the context of selecting technologies for renewable energy generation.• Until 2016, I taught Contaminated land I (CIV8007/4020), a 10 CATS points module that introduced the concepts of contaminated land management and detailed how exploratory investigations and preliminary and generic risk assessments should be undertaken.Other Involvements:• Member, Sustainable Practices Committee in the School of Natural and Built Environment• REF champion for Civil Engineering at QUB
