UKTI is the government department responsible for the delivery of advice, guidance and support to organisations trading or wishing to trade internationally. As an International Trade Advisor my role was to work with businesses who want to expand their international trading activity and to ensure that they are encouraged, directed and supported. I was responsible for developing the UKTI regional sector strategy for the creative Industries. I completed specialist traininng on e-commerce and intellectual property rights.

Cork

I had responsibility for providing business support through the Enterprise Europe Network, which is a European Commission funded networking of business support agencies. I assisted in organising Chamber trade missions to China and India as well as EU trade events in Cork, Kerry and Limerick. I advised companies on EU directives and standards as well as acting as a contact person for international trade and business start-up enquiries in the South West Ireland region. I was an authorised signatory for export documentation (certificates of origin, carnets etc).

Cork

I managed the international trade department of the Chamber on a maternity leave contract. My responsibilities included reporting to the EU Commission on public sector projects carried out (Project themes: Innovation & Entrepreneurship), organising large trade seminars, brokerage events and overseas trade missions to promote Cork internationally, working with Cork City Council to strengthen existing links between Cork and China (Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen), organising the bi-annual Cork Chamber research mission to Brussels to meet with senior EU policy advisors, obtaining sponsorship for the Cork Chamber Bursary Scheme and also for the Cork Chamber School Science Awards. I promoted the Enterprise Europe Network through various marketing channels including the Chamber website, Chamberlink (monthly printed Chamber magazine), Eurolink (email newsletter), eBulletin (email newsletter), Linkedin, Twitter and acted as a member of the selection panel for the European Network of Mentors for Female Entrepreneurship and the Cork City Learning Forum.

Ireland

I was responsible for researching new advertising channels and revenue generating partnerships for Lidl. I planned new national advertising promotions and co-ordinated the company's online presence. This involved developing the website and managing electronic mailings to customers including special offer newsletters. I also organised competitions and obtained sponsorship for promotions in the weekly advertising leaflets. I had sole responsibility for managing the internet homepage for Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. I also analysed internet statistics and newsletter subscriber behaviour for the company.

I investigated payment queries for Deutsche Bank large corporate European customers. My main clients were State Street Munich GmbH. I became a member of the internal RARE (Recognising and Rewarding Excellence) committee, set up to recognise innovators within the organisation. As part of this committee I was part of the selection panel for the monthly RARE awards ceremony to recognise innovation. I also assisted in training newer members of staff on payment operations.

I was responsible for the day-to-day development and support of Guinness customers in Bavaria, Germany. I maximised sales through account management of key customers and worked with logistics partners to improve the supply chain in the southeast region. I obtained this role through the IBEC Export Orientation Programme and whilst completing my professional experience I also studied for a Postgraduate Diploma in International Business Development with Dublin Institute of Technology. As part of this course I wrote a paper on differences in cross-cultural negotiation styles between Irish and German customers, which I then presented to the Guinness Germany national sales team.
