Ever since I left the University, I started working in an architect firm as an assistant town planner. With the experience I gained as an assistant town planner, I was given an opportunity to work in a public policy think tank by chance, a place I never thought I would be at. In fact, the hands-on experience from my work in the architect firm gave me the technical knowledge as well as a taste of the real case scenarios in the construction industry. All these experience gained during my practising years became an added value when I joined the think tank where policy research in urban studies is one of their research focus. I am able to then give constructive feedback and offer an alternate perspectives to the more academic-based work. Amazingly, I am attached to the same think tank for 12 years now and counting, that my role has evolved from research-based work to executive based tasks. After a decade working at a think tank and being in the senior management level now, I am very optimistic that as long as there is a will and the knowledge, there will always be a way to get things done. Now I am actively engaged in policy discussion, strategic planning and managed to be sitting in some active advisory panels in Penang, namely the Penang Green Agenda and the Penang2030 advisory panel. Apart from that, I am now working very closely with my team on TechCamp Malaysia, an effort supported by US Embassy in KL for the works on countering disinformation and media literacy. Not forgetting the experience I’ve gained as a YSEALI Professional Fellow alumni. Looking forward to more evolvement of my skills and knowledge which I can gain from this think tank and move forward to bridging the gap between academic research, public policy as well as the real industrial work.
