I secured the Technician role in the Microbiology lab although was quickly promoted to Scientist as part of the COVID team. I gained priceless experience by being part of the team that ensured that the water quality for Scotland was in not affected by the nationwide lock downs. I was responsible for ensuring that UK / Scottish health and safety legislation was maintained and was a major factor in ensuring the working environment was kept in a clean and tidy manner with due attention to the careful daily maintenance of laboratory fittings and equipment.I was able to develop my analytic skills and gained training in many UKAS accredited methods (CPD in progress) and had a unique insight into the importance of team work and dedication to a busy lab in a time of national crisis. I was awarded a highly competitive, 10-week studentship in conjunction with Dr Leena Kerr. I isolates and investigated endophytic Streptomyces spp from salt tolerant plants with a view to findings novel anti microbials. I purified the cells of interest then tested antimicrobial properties on a small range of multi drug resistant bacteria including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. This gave me more laboratory experience in lots of aspect of bench work and allowed me to work on my own initiative. I gained experience in field work and sample collecting. I reflect on my practises and I am always looking to improve. I was able to create my own experimental design and learn on the job. My work served as the baseline from which Dr Kerr’s ongoing research into novel compounds for antibiotics.
