The advisory group has identified these themes using learning from previous funding rounds, monitoring sessions, evaluation reports, and information from key partners such as The Promise Scotland team. The decision-makers panel has played a crucial role in the development of the assessment process and the distribution of the funds.

I was part of an award nominated strategic team at the forefront of co-redesigning the HfS to better position ourselves strategically to lobby for improvements to student experiences for equity of opportunity, change culture, aspirations and practices.I have been involved in co- developing the 2023-2025 strategic plan that puts Lived Experience at the centre of policy and procedures to improve the outcomes for Care Experienced individuals. As part of a team of four we successfully gained £250,000 in funding for our onwards strategic goals. What do the HUB for success do?We develop partnerships between FE, HE, local authorities and the third sector. Together we strive to improve local practice.Our student communities are stronger if each and every student has what they need.Schools, colleges and universities must recognise the role they play as adjacent parts of the wider scaffolding of care so they can support and nurture those with care experience. (The Promise, p.46). We help our partners see themselves as the scaffolding of care so that through working together we can keep The Promise.On 5 February 2020, the Care Review published The Promise. This document sets out the changes needed to make sure all children grow up feeling safe, loved, and heard. On Care Day 2020 we welcomed our partners and care-experienced learners to a celebratory event where we affirmed our intention to keep the promise.Universities and colleges in Scotland must also act on their responsibilities towards care experienced students, ensuring they are provided with access to mentoring and support throughout their studies. (p.93).We are currently exploring what mentoring opportunities are available across our partnership, what we can learn from each other and how we can help to Keep the Promise togetherWe can provide training inputs and are working on a programme of virtual events for practitioners to share expertise in 2022

I have graduated with an honours degree in the first class. During my university experience I have covered a blend of applied and practical laboratory techniques in Cell and Microbiology in order to provide me with the understanding necessary for a career in the biomedical / biotechnological industry.I have particularly excelled in group work where I am able to utilise my leadership and communication capabilities. Each year affords me at least 6 hours per week laboratory experience and provides a sound understanding of the biology of cells and metabolism. The laboratory sessions I have partaken in have given me confidence in many areas of biological assays. I am competent with aseptic techniques and bench work. I have experience of media preparation, bacteria isolation / purification and autoclaving, PCR and Electrophoresis techniques, DNA isolation and preparation. I perform complex technical tasks aseptically. I have good manual dexterity. I have strong IT literacy and am proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and research methods.I have experience in data analysis throughout my degree and work with ‘R’ and Minitab programs to perform T and ANOVA tests in order to analyse data. I secured a volunteer role in the animal husbandry / research team in the Zebra Fish Facility at Heriot Watt. My work was recognised for the in vivo Nano particle toxicology assays I participated in. The work used zebra fish, supervised by Professor Ted Henry. I was required to be accurate, reliable and ensure that I adhere to strict SOPs’. I was required to work as part of a team and ensure that regulatory conditions were adhered to.

Working with Dr Euan Brown in Heriot Watt as my supervisor I will be undertaking experiments and learning more about neurology. Excitation and inhibition of neural activity and myelination in mouse spinal cord cultures.

I secured the Technician role in the Microbiology lab although was quickly promoted to Scientist as part of the COVID team. I gained priceless experience by being part of the team that ensured that the water quality for Scotland was in not affected by the nationwide lock downs. I was responsible for ensuring that UK / Scottish health and safety legislation was maintained and was a major factor in ensuring the working environment was kept in a clean and tidy manner with due attention to the careful daily maintenance of laboratory fittings and equipment.I was able to develop my analytic skills and gained training in many UKAS accredited methods (CPD in progress) and had a unique insight into the importance of team work and dedication to a busy lab in a time of national crisis. I was awarded a highly competitive, 10-week studentship in conjunction with Dr Leena Kerr. I isolates and investigated endophytic Streptomyces spp from salt tolerant plants with a view to findings novel anti microbials. I purified the cells of interest then tested antimicrobial properties on a small range of multi drug resistant bacteria including Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. This gave me more laboratory experience in lots of aspect of bench work and allowed me to work on my own initiative. I gained experience in field work and sample collecting. I reflect on my practises and I am always looking to improve. I was able to create my own experimental design and learn on the job. My work served as the baseline from which Dr Kerr’s ongoing research into novel compounds for antibiotics.
