Foodstuffs is a cooperative comprising the PAK'nSAVE, New World, and Four Square supermarket groups, and several other brands. As well as supply and distribution, Foodstuffs provides IT and other services to its members.The point-of-sales (POS) team at Foodstuffs South Island (FSSI) maintains a suite of applications written in Delphi. As part of this team I have developed and deployed updates across FSSI’s network of over 150 markets and 1300 lanes.A key responsibility is driving improvements to software development processes, including introducing systems and processes for revision control, build automation and automated testing.

Cochlear Instruments manufactures cochlear implants that restore hearing to the profoundly deaf. My role there involved analysis of returned implant devices to identify the root cause of failure and to initiate appropriate corrective actions.

Dynamic Controls manufactures controllers and accessories for electric wheelchairs and sells them around the world. I was employed by Dynamic to select and verify replacements for obsolete electronic components. Later, I moved into the role of verification engineer on a major development project. This involved developing test plans and procedures to provide verification of design outputs and validation of the product. As the project progressed I helped with design improvements related to issues that I encountered during testing.Throughout my employment at Dynamic Controls, I was involved with meeting the strict quality and performance requirements of European and US regulatory bodies for medical devices. I also had regular involvement with design and testing for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and attended an EMC course in 2000.

Marsden Point, New Zealand

The Marsden Point refinery processes crude oil into petrol and other products for the New Zealand market. I carried out four projects at the refinery: assessing project planning tools (and automating the conversion of files between them); developing a system for fast costing of scaffold structures; automating the monitoring of valve lifetimes; and helping to set up a system for improved monitoring of bearings.

My thesis, entitled Design of an Interference Lithography System [1], received commendatory reports from its examiners and was passed.
