About Sjef Berendsen

Expertise as a Practitioner and Consultant in the intensive treatment of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Consultant and trainer in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and EMDR.Expertise as a Teacher, Trainer and Workshop Facilitator for various kinds of professions and students: psychologists, psychotherapists, psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, social workers, diplomats, judges, lawyers, air traffic controllers, bank staff, police officers, fire fighters, oil company personell, et cetera.Worked as a military psychologist for 14 years and was at the disaster area after the crash of the EL Al Boeing in 1992 for the psychosocial support of the military medics, served 6 months in 1993 in former Yugoslavia for the psychosocial support of the Dutch UNPROFOR soldiers, went to Zagreb in 1995 when the Dutch troops arrived there after the fall of Srebrenica and served 6 months in Kosovo for the psychosocial support of the Dutch KFOR soldiers. Working for the Institute for Psychotrauma I was involved in the psychosocial support of victims of bank robberies, industrial accidents, violence and other shocking events in the Netherlands and abroad. For instance, in 2004 I was send to Thailand after the Tsunami as part of an ANWB team for the psychosocial support of Dutch Tsunami victims.

    PSYTREC believes that Complex PTSD is best treated in a short and intensive form. Research and experience has shown that our INTENSIVE5® and INTENSIVE8® treatment programs achieve good results in 5 or 8 days (56% loss of PTSD diagnoses). The treatment programs contain the same treatment elements (prolonged exposure, EMDR, sports & psycho-education) but vary in duration. Depending on the number and severity of the trauma's clients have experienced and comorbid diagnoses, the INTENSIVE5® or INTENSIVE8® treatment programme is indicated. The INTENSIVE5® treatment program consists of 5 consecutive days of treatment. After one week the so-called "return day" takes place followed by the Closing session in the next week later.The INTENSIVE8® treatment program consists of 2 times 4 consecutive days within two weeks. Clients come for treatment for 4 consecutive days, go home for the weekend for 3 days and then again come for treatment for 4 consecutive days . After one week the so-called "return day" takes place followed by the Closing session in the next week later.Follow up monitoring of the treatment results takes place by means of a PTSD questionnaire at 3 months and the CAPS 5 at 6 months.
