Minor Works Ot Project EngineerUnited Utilities Apr 2019 - PresentNorth West Of EnglandDelivering a range of small to medium size projects on UU Working site. Working from initial Service Request to working up a URS and estimate of costs through to delivery and final closeout and Handover to Operations. This involves working with the client to establish requirements, generating/agreeing a URS, generation of work packs to supply to external contractors and following internal procedure to complete various configuration and commission requirements. Project Governance, review of the proposed design and ensuring all the work is completed to UU Standards. Occasionally this involves personally developing and/or modifying exist PLC code, HMI’s and SCADA’s. -
Operation Technology Project EngineerUnited Utilities Nov 2014 - Apr 2019North West Of EnglandProject Engineer, responsible for Technical Governance, ensuring that Design-Build contractors designs conform to UU standards and ensuring that contractors/sub-contractors follow the UU Project Delivery System.Working on an Ambitious Project to provide Remote Monitoring and Control of all United Utilities Waste Water Treatment Works. This was achieved by supplying each site with a SCADA System, which provided a facility for Remote Access over UU’s WAN, design and install a redundant Fibre Optic Ring around each site, replace or upgrade local PLC as required to create an Ethernet data network to communicate with the SCADA. Additional monitoring and control points had been identified requiring new instrumentation to be incorporated into the design and integrated into the SCADA and UU’s existing telemetry system. The site SCADAs were built to a standard software template to ensure a consistent product across all sites. The SCADA template defined both the appearance, layout, navigation and functionality provided, each site is provided with unique mimics representing the site/process.On the project I was responsible for Technical Governance of the submitted design, this involved leading 3rd party contractor site survey, reviewing detailed design proposals to ensure the design complies with WIMES/UU Standards and the requirements of the project, challenging design proposals and responding to Technical Queries and attending FAT/SAT witnessing/acceptance.Ensuring the Contractor/Sub-Contractors followed the UU Project Delivery process, ensuring key milestones activities are delivered on time. Generally leasing with site Operations and the Contractors/Sub-Contractors, acting as PCW (Person Controlling Works; this is a project coordination and HSE review function). -

Senior Automation EngineerYokogawa Uk Ltd Feb 2014 - Nov 2014RuncornDeveloping a PLC based Fire and Gas detection and water deluge control system for Europe’s largest onshore oil field and processing facility. The system has been developed to replace several existing Fire and Gas detection system and provide control/monitoring of the water deluge system. As a senior engineer I undertook typical project life cycle engineering, including assessing and commenting on the clients URS, raising technical queries, developing an FDS(Functional Design Specification), DDS (Detailed Design Specification) and FAT (Factory Acceptance Test) procedure and test record. I also developed hardware typical designs (circuit diagrams on AutoCAD) including the development of a current limiting circuit, to interface between existing field devices and the PLC input cards. I also developed the PLC software, including IO allocation/schedule, PLC hardware configuration and developing software Function Blocks. The Fire and Gas system is monitored by the existing Yokogawa DCS, I defined the interface between the two systems and lead the development of the required mimics, alarms and operate interfaces. All of the above required liaising with client and attend face to face client meetings.

It is collaboration between Dow Chemical Company and Saudi Aramco. It is a highly integrated complex comprising of a number of Process Plants – each a major project in its own right. The project is broken down into a number of Envelopes each containing several Process Units. Jacobs’ Engineering scope is EPC (engineer-procure-construct) for the Chlorine Envelope which comprises of four units, Brine Production, Chlor-Alkali, Hydrogen Chloride Conversion and Envelope Shared Services. The production process has been developed using S88 design philosophy and this is reflected in the process control philosophy, the control for the process is described in sections which are broken down into units as per the S88 model. The control of each unit, within the Chlorine Envelope is described at Jacobs Engineering using standard documentation “Process Control Strategy Document”, which includes all required data (IO, Alarms, Graphics, sequences control loops etc) to allow development of the control software by the MAC (Main Automation Contractor). The MAC is ABB utilising ABB 800xA DCS.My responsibilities at Jacobs Engineering are:-Developing and review Process Control Strategy Document supplied to the MAC.Reviewing Software Design Specifications, supplied from the MAC.Understanding how Third Party Package Systems are interfaced into the ABB system.Capturing requirements for interfacing with Third Party Package SystemsLiaising with Third Party Package Systems supplier

Senior Plc EngineerDiamond Light Source Sep 2004 - Sep 2006The Diamond synchrotron is the largest UK-funded scientific facility to be built for over 30 years. Whilst contracting at Diamond I helped develop a standard software model, which allowed common software code to be installed in all the OMRON CS1 PLC’s. The control system being built using hundreds of discrete PLC’s controlling sections of the Synchrotron, this design was chosen to reduce as far as possible any radiating EMF from network and eliminate reliance on a central control system. Further to this my responsibilities were the creation of health and safety, commissioning documentation, risk assessments/method statements, supervising commissioning logistic having several teams of commissioning engineers and liaising with other engineering discipline.
