We train students of (para)medical professions and healthcare professionals. In training sessions, these healthcare professionals or students interact with people who have extensive experience with illness and care. These experts by experience share how illness has impacted their lives on the social, physical and mental domain. Interacting with these patient coaches enables healthcare professionals and students to anticipate patient needs. In all training sessions, we aim to include professionals or students from different professions to stimulate interprofessional collaboration. Our foundation aims at both enabling professionals and students in delivering person-centred, integrated care, as well as empowering experts by experience. By sharing their experiences, their illness trajectory can help future and current healthcare professionals, which adds to a sense of purpose, enables them to participate in society and some experts by experience report a therapeutical effect of sharing their experiences. Matthijs Bosveld and I founded PAP foundation during our bachelors and after finishing our bachelors we took an academic year (2017-2018) to further develop training modules and expand. In the academic year 2021-2022, our initial module will be followed by approximately 1300 students and we have started with providing similar training programmes to practising professionals. Initially, we focused solely on students learning outcomes. However, we noticed that participating in education can be beneficial to the experts by experience too. Participating can provide the experts by experience with a sense of purpose, acceptance of their life with disease, increased societal participation, and can make them more engaged in managing their health and health care. The Patient As a Person Foundation now has a double aim: (1) improving the person-centredness of (future) healthcare professionals, and (2) empowering our experts by experience. The PhD-trajectory focuses on developing and evaluating interventions aimed at experts by experience.
