Phd Student
My PhD Topic is investigating how to bring the modern power of the web to chemical research, with a specific focus on semantic electronic lab notebooks. As part of my research, I have conducted a market study, one quantitative user study (survey), and two qualitative user studies (focus groups and lab observations). I have also created a proof-of-concept web application for the semantic layer of an ELN. Graduate Consultant
Worked on two web projects. One involved java development of the backend of the website, working with large datasets and coordinating reading writing and storing data into these, in addition to performing complicated queries over them. The other involved working on the three.co.uk site, where I worked on both the front end (JSP's) and backend (Java) of the website. I both added new functionality to the site, and fixed existing bugs. I learnt the content management system fatwire, and how to create and edit JSP's as well as enhancing both my java and web skills. I worked with the client closely spending minimum one day a week on client site and this greatly boosted my client facing skills. I believe this job and the projects I worked on allowed me to greatly enhance my interpersonal skills, in addition to learning to problem solve under pressure and the ability to manage my own work directly with the client.
