About Sarah Burrows

I have worked for and with the US Naval Research Laboratory in several capacities, primarily focusing on high speed chemically reacting flow of hydrogen for hypersonic applications. Through the modeling experience I have gained from this research, as well as the experience I have gained through my experimental terahertz spectroscopy group, I am confident in my abilities as an effective and knowledgeable researcher regardless of the laboratory configuration. With my internship collaborating with NASA Langley Research Center, I have also honed many soft skills by focusing on educational outreach to high school students through the Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars Summer Academy. This consisted of participation and interning at the high school level and college level. My interests are generally focused on developing a deeper understanding of my aerospace engineering degree particularly relating to propulsion sciences. Having these ambitions has led me through research to study propulsion systems and combustion modeling and to seek out new opportunities in order to contribute to the betterment of the spaceflight and aviation industry.

  • Air Force Research Laboratory
    Graduate Student Researcher
Air Force Research Laboratory May 2024 - Aug 2024
    Edwards, California, United States
    - Investigated iterative learning control algorithms for Hall thruster operation.- Coded multiple LabVIEW scripts to perform both one-parameter and two-parameter optimizations under differing conditions for automated search of both a test case Lorenz condition and the Hall thruster.- Analyzed all collected datasets to study convergence of different thruster performance metrics as the system parameters neared a reference condition.
  • Virginia Space Grant Consortium
    College Intern
Virginia Space Grant Consortium Jun 2023 - Aug 2023
    Nasa Langley Research Center
Assisted students with effective intra- and inter-team communication/collaboration. I served as a representative from my university to provide guidance to students regarding considerations for future careers.
  • U.S. Naval Research Laboratory
    College Intern
    U.S. Naval Research Laboratory Jan 2023 - May 2023
Lead the modeling and analysis of the behavior of multiple cases focusing on chemically reacting methane flow at lower speeds. Used the high-fidelity simulation software, the JENRE® Multiphysics Framework, to simulate these complex problems. I utilized tools to simulate and post process chemically reacting flow models that demonstrate the stability of new, cutting edge numerics.

Lead the modeling and analysis of the behavior of multiple cases including a high speed chemically reacting flow of hydrogen and air for hypersonics applications. Used the high-fidelity simulation software, the JENRE® Multiphysics Framework, to simulate these complex problems. I developed tools to simulate and post process chemically reacting flow models that demonstrate the stability of new, cutting edge numerics for the first time.E. J. Ching, R F. Johnson, S.
