About Sara Hendrix

Bilingual, Educational Leader with 10+ years working for Tennessee Public Schools. Certified in Spanish PreK-12, English 7-12, ESL PreK-12 (English as a Second Language), and ILL (Instructional Leadership License). Looking to leverage my wealth of knowledge and experience into a roles related to bilingual education, family engagement, and curriculum and instruction. I began to speak Spanish as a child, learning from my mother's ESL students. By the time I was 12, I had a growing passion for Spanish language and culture. I started taking Spanish as an elective in the 7th grade and continued my studies all through high school. During this time, I maintained several close relationships with immigrant families, specifically from Mexico and Peru. Upon high school graduation, I was unsure of my career path. However, I knew for certain that Spanish was something I could always use as a valuable skillset, be it in education, law, medicine, etc. My pursuit of Spanish eventually led me to many incredible experiences including a semester abroad in Chile, a month abroad in Spain, and traveling to Argentina, Mexico, and Nicaragua. In three short years, I graduated Georgia College and State University with a Bachelor of Art's in Spanish with a minor in International Studies. In October 2013, I began to serve in hospitals in various entry level positions, from Hispanic Initiative Intern with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta to a Child Life Intern with Vanderbilt's Monroe Carrel Children's Hospital. While I loved working with hospitalized children, I found myself consistently being used by hospital staff to do translation more than engage in medical work. That is when I made the shift towards education and decided to combine my love of children and youth with my love of Spanish. 10+ years later, I continue to love working with students and staff of all ages. I have successfully taught students in both Spanish and English, implementing a culturally-inclusive curriculum that engaged my students. In 2016, I led a group of high school students from all over the nation to Chile on a month long intensive study abroad program in Spanish Language and Culture. I hold both a Master's of Education with a concentration in English Language Learners and a Master's in Educational Leadership. I hope to attain my doctorate and continue to hold positions where I am able to positively impact education for all students. I am a testament to the power of education; It gave me the opportunity to fully explore a subject I was passionate about and expanded my worldview.
