About Terje Skotheim
I have been the founder or co-founder of several startups in diverse fields, including spectrometers, sensors, MEMS devices, lithium batteries, high-powered lasers, and viral and bacterial eradication technology. My research has spanned several disciplines in materials science, including conducting polymers, electronic materials, semiconductors, ion conductors and diamond-like carbon. The companies I have been involved with have brought from laboratory research to market-ready status a diverse range of products, such as miniaturized multispectral detectors for illicit drugs, rechargeable Li-sulfur batteries, IR-MEMS emitters, glucose biosensors, and a low-cost process for solar-grade silicon. My current focus at Lightsense is developing low-cost miniature, handheld spectrometers and AI-driven multispectral systems, covering the spectrum from UV through mid-IR with a wide range of applications, including: detection of illicit and counterfeit drugs, non-invasive medical diagnostics, detection of pathogens for food safety, and industrial process control. I have held research positions in Europe and the US and was Head of the Conducting Polymer Group at Brookhaven National Laboratory before launching my career as entrepreneur. I have been the (co)editor of Handbook of Conducting Polymers (CRC-Taylor & Francis, 4 editions) and Electro-responsive Molecular and Polymeric Systems (Marcel Dekker) and have over 70 patents and more than 200 publications.
