About Skye Wu

At 17, I was discouraged by a career advisor against studying IT at university. At 21, I was discouraged by a career adviser against seeking a profession in Computer Forensics. Now in my early 30s, I have spent over 10 years working in the IT Industry specialising in Computer Forensics, eDiscovery, Investigations and Open Source Intelligence & Threat Intelligence. If I could have one wish in my career, it is to wish that I had a mentor figure and support as I was trying to start my career. My advice to all trying to kick start their career in the Cyber Security field... "Push on and push through, seek out those with the same spark and together shine." - Skye Wu.Professionally I am passionate about:* Using Data, Smart Tools, working with even Smarter People to identify yet unknown risks.* Using Intelligence to help protect the customer and company's data. * Using Intelligence to drive collaboration to a better and more secure future.* Educating and increase awareness around security risks and threats.* Develop streamlined and repeatable intelligence reporting / assessment processes.* Talent scouting* Inspire motivate women to pursue their dreamsI was born in Shanghai, China. I came to Australia at the age of 11 and have lived in Melbourne ever since. I don't think I could live anywhere else long term... except maybe New York... (maybe). I have worked in a number of different industries including Government, Professional Services / Consulting, small boutique firm and now large corporation. I have also been fortunate enough to have travelled and worked in a number of countries and have built an international and domestic network of likeminded IT professionals. My current role at Telstra has given me the opportunity to combine my passion for finding the truth, problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration through my work with the Discovery team. I am an investigator, a consultant, an analyst, a recruiter; best of all, I am me.

My objective in this role is to build an inclusive, diverse and sustainable threat intelligence team that delivers recommendations to enable businesses to proactively manage their cyber risks in an evolving landscape. For the past 3 years I have worked with various internal cyber security leaders to align my team's objectives to the wider Cyber Security strategy. Additionally for development I have empowered individual team members to push outside of their comfort zone and learn new skills to further their career paths. I have also taken a leading role in talent scouting and recruitment for the wider Cyber Security group. This initiative recently resulted the recruitment of 9 interns from diverse backgrounds. Periodically I have taken on the Principal Threat Research and Intelligence role to oversee the division in my manager's absence. Outside of my day to day role I have also undertaken various mentoring opportunities including mentoring the 9 interns I helped to recruit.
  • Telstra
    Lead Discovery Analyst

"How do you know, what you don't know; if you were not looking for it?"After being a Digital Forensic Analyst helping to analyse and assist in police investigations in finding evidence to prove or disprove crimes. Then spending years helping corporate clients with various projects and investigations in response to potentially inappropriate behaviour or regulatory requirements. I have always wondered, what would it be like to shift the effort in responding after the fact to a more proactive approach?Being a part of the Discovery team I help lead a team of highly intelligent people from various backgrounds and different areas of expertise. Our purpose is to identify areas of risk before they become an issue for the organisation; placing the focus on a more proactive approach to Cyber Security. Working with management I put together the team's strategy, breaking down our plans into achievable action points and help guide the team in thinking with an investigative mindset. We go beyond the traditional "needles in a haystack", think "needles in a needle stack". Why? Because the "stack" is your data, then your anomalies are the needles that appear to be different, they may be bent, they may be broken. Discovery helps to understand the “why”. I mentor university students wanting a career in Cyber Security, help find our next generation of Discovery Analysts and present at conferences!Who ever said you can't have fun while working?

I use experiences gained from my previous roles to develop processes to collect and analyse data from various external sources. Identify indications of data breach, information disclosure, potential threats and other information of benefit to the organisation and the wider cyber community.I am a self-motivator and strive for constant improvement by working with other teams to improve and develop new methods to search for Telstra data, and sharing that with our stakeholders.
