Volunteer LGBTQI+ Thematic Specialist "Country/Thematic Specialists are part of a corps of volunteer leaders who serve as country or issue experts and strategists for Amnesty International USA. These specialists serve as a link between Amnesty’s primary research staff based abroad and the members and staff of the US branch of the organization. These specialists develop a solid understanding of Amnesty International’s concerns in the target country or issue, and may be called upon to represent the organization in relevant forums.In collaboration with other volunteers and staff, Country/Thematic Specialists develop action strategies designed to bring about positive change in the human rights situation in the target country or issue. These strategies may involve rapid responses, media and social media engagement, US and foreign government advocacy, and collaboration with coalitions."

Provide crisis intervention information, safety planning, support, and advocacy to crisis line callers and shelter residents. Screen domestic violence survivors for admittance to emergency shelter, intake and exit procedures.Provide individual support and advocacy based services to the shelter’s residents. Monitor shelter activities to maintain a safe and supportive shelter atmosphere by completing routine safety checks. Assist in crisis management and de-escalation tactics to crisis line callers and shelter residents. Connect crisis line callers and shelter residents to local and community resources and agencies. Offer legal support by guiding survivors through the completion and submission of Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs), ensuring a seamless and supportive process.

Conduct comprehensive interviews with LGBTQ+ refugees seeking assistance, skillfully assessing their current situations in their host country. Collaborate with program managers on a weekly basis to strategize and develop plans to address the unique needs and requests of applicants. Facilitate referrals to specialize support services such as resettlement, psycho-social support, medical assistance, housing, and legal aid. Proficiently administer intake processes, managing lists and meticulously collecting all required supporting documents and other pertinent information.

Facilitated access to mental health and LGBTQIA+ affirming counseling services for students by coordinating appointments and providing recommendations on behalf of both students and clinicians.Cultivated a secure and inclusive environment for LGBTQIA+ students, contributing to the overall well-being of the campus community.
