My name is Skyler Perkes. I am a recent graduate from J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University and am awaiting results from the July 2019 Texas bar. I received a Masters Degree at the University of Utah in Bioengineering and a Bachelors at BYU in Biophysics. Ralph Waldo Emerson said that “the purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” This is my motivation for pursuing a career in law. When I was 12, a good friend of my family was involved in an accidental explosion in his garage. As a result of this explosion, our friend ended up losing his right arm up to his elbow. As a husband and father of four children, this accident could have been extremely harmful to the family. Fortunately though, the impact of this accident was limited when the father was able to receive a prosthetic arm. It was amazing to see how normal a life he was able to live as a result of this new technology at the time. This experience made me want to be able to have a similar impact in the lives of other people. Since then I have been focusing my studies in understanding the human body and biotechnology and now law.
