SGC will help you create a solution using coaching, inclusive inquiry, training, facilitation, or strategy development.Latonya Slack, principal and founder of SGC has more than 20 years experience in the non-profit sector, most recently as senior program officer for California Democracy with the James Irvine Foundation where she led initiatives on voter engagement, capacity building and leadership for nonprofit organizations. Prior to her work with the foundation, she was Executive Director of the California Black Women’s Health Project, a statewide policy and advocacy organization. She's previously worked with SEIU as a political community organizer and with the Legal Aid Foundation AmeriCorps program, assisting community groups with establishing nonprofit organizations. Latonya currently serves as a board member of Forward Together, the California Association of Nonprofits and California Nonprofits Insurance Services.

Managed a grantmaking portfolio with 30+ grantee organizations engaged in civic participation and community organizing. Developed and implemented key strategy, managed consultants, designed convenings and fostered collaboration in the civic engagement field. Monitored grants, participating in proposal review and recommendation for California based organizations engaged in public policy and advocacy. Advised internal review committees on organizational leadership, best grantmaking and grant monitoring strategies. Served as supervisor for the Los Angeles office, managing administrative staff and representing the foundation in key regional collaborations.Key Accomplishments● Managed California Votes Initiative – a 3-year, $10 million initiative designed to improve voting rates and evaluate best GOTV strategies in low income and ethnic communities.● Implemented initiative to strengthen the capacity and development of community based organizations engaged in organizing around local public policy issues.● Strengthened foundation’s grantmaking practices around civic participation; engaged other grantmakers and public officials to understand best practices.

A statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to improving Black women’s health through public policy, advocacy and community empowerment. Primary advocacy issues included diabetes, obesity prevention, reproductive health and mental health.Key Accomplishments● Developed a 5 year capacity building and statewide policy advocacy plan, using information gleaned from focus groups, a survey and key stakeholder input.● Established annual policy summit, town hall meetings and a lay advocate training program to train leaders to advocate for health policy changes.● Published a statewide research study identifying critical health policy issues.● Hosted a statewide conference in 2001 with 250 advocates.● Established statewide headquarters in Inglewood.● Increased budget from 150K to 500K; increased staff size from 1 to 6, plus interns. ● Strengthened internal operations by expanding and training board of directors, securing tax-exempt status, implementing financial controls and networked computer systems. ● Directed South Central Los Angeles community resource center with free fitness and nutrition classes and health education programs. Served on numerous community advisory boards, task force workgroups and coalitions to provide expertise on Black women’s health matters.
