A retired merchant banker and chartered accountant, Tony Arnold-Boakes lives in the Sussex South Downs, where he loves to walk in the countryside; and in London, where he belongs to The Union Society of St. James's Westminster, The United Wards' Club of the City of London, and Broad Street Ward Club.He retired in 2004 as chief analyst responsible for credit management at DZ BANK (the central bank for the impressive German Mittelstand), where he added another to his languages and which he had joined in London from a board level post at Securum (the Swedish government owned business recovery group) in 1994.His earlier positions were at Nordea Bank; directorships (as a securitisation specialist) at First Mortgage Securities, the capital markets issuer of which he was a founder member; and senior assistant director in the banking department at Morgan Grenfell, the leading accepting house and merchant bank, historically linked with J. P. Morgan of the U. S. and subsequently bought by Deutsche Bank in the 80s. During the early period he advised clients in London and further afield, including in Antwerp, Brussels and Johannesburg; and he served the AMP, then the largest life office in the southern hemisphere, as an investment manager in Sydney.Articles of indenture under Henry Peat and qualification at KPMG (then known as Peats), the major firm of chartered accountants, followed Russian and philology at UCL, French at KCL and school at Brighton College, where he enjoyed embarrassing perennial luck with the Jenkin-Jones open prize for classics and form prizes in French, Russian, Greek, and Latin, suffering with amusement his nickname, "Horace".
