The goal was to gather insights to develop more inclusive and impactful outdoor experiences that empower healthy community connection.I partnered with three diverse organizations—Awotaan, The Women's Center, and a group of women from Ghost River Rediscovery—to conduct focus groups. My role involved designing and leading these discussions, formulating questions that encouraged participants to explore their visions for their communities and how outdoor programming could support these aspirations. The discussions went beyond surface-level inquiries, uncovering both obstacles and supports within their communities.A profound realization emerged across all focus groups: participants recognized their potential to influence and support community leaders, transforming from passive recipients to active collaborators in creating healthier communities. This shift in perspective empowered the women to see themselves as agents of change, capable of working with leaders to foster better choices for their communities.The key outcomes of the project were twofold: first, outdoor programming involving key leaders could be more impactful than broader community programs, though both are valuable; second, the voices of marginalized women—mothers, daughters, aunties, and grandmothers—are crucial in shaping programs that truly meet community needs. This experience demonstrated the transformative power of thoughtful inquiry and community collaboration.

Tasked with laying out all interior walls, I worked independently, ensuring the accuracy of every detail. Leveraging my strong relationships with project managers from my previous surveying work at Sellen Construction, I seamlessly integrated architectural updates, minimizing errors and ensuring a smooth workflow.Despite initial skepticism from some team members, my commitment to precision and thorough plan reviews earned their respect. One notable moment was responding calmly and effectively during a heart attack emergency, which shifted the perception of a major detractor and reinforced my belief in the power of calm excellence. My dedication to quality work led GK Knutson to rehire me for a subsequent project south of Bellingham, where I continued to excel in layout carpentry.

Head Carpenter Surveyor, Skanska | Seattle, WA | 2004-2006As the sole in-house Carpenter Surveyor for Skanska’s Seattle office, I was responsible for the precision layout and structural accuracy of multiple high-profile projects. I collaborated closely with project leads, engineers, and subcontractors to ensure all structural elements met stringent accuracy requirements, notably achieving 1/8 inch precision for the intricate Bellevue Square Skybridge and as-built recordings for the Tacoma High School Renovation.I took over this critical role after the retirement of my mentor in the first months of this position, Ty Capelle, leading complex projects independently for two years. My work was essential in ensuring the success of projects like the Seattle Courthouse aesthetic tile design and the intricate steel layout for public works, where accuracy was paramount. My responsibilities also included quality control, plan review, and managing the seamless integration of structural drawings into the physical construction. My promotion to apprentice layout carpenter marked a pivotal moment, where I was entrusted with setting out control lines, benchmarks, and ensuring structural accuracy according to the architectural plans. This role required a steep learning curve, but it also provided invaluable experience in precision layout, a skill that became central to my career.Working closely with the lead surveyor and other seasoned professionals, I learned best practices that I continue to apply in my work today.
