As managing director I grew revenue 160% by expanding our services, hiring 7 new employees, and increasing our online and print marketing. I designed and trained tutors to use of multiple zoom accounts simultaneously with each student to create a screen sharing environment that made it easy to share handwritten work in real time to facilitate virtual learning and communication. The successful use of technology during the pandemic allowed us to grow and acquire a competing company during the pandemic. In addition, I promoted and sold our services to families, communicated with clients, oversaw tutors, and managed schedules for all tutors and their clients.

This temporary position was my first step in transitioning from academia to the wine industry. After interviewing with several wineries, I found the perfect opportunity at Sugarloaf Custom Crush. Working in a winery that specializes in producing high-quality, boutique wines for over 30 winemakers in Northern California, I learned the complexities of production from the management of wine tracking and TTB compliance to the many aspects of wine production from grape to press to bottle.

In addition to teaching classes and overseeing undergraduate researchers, I held multiple leadership positions within the faculty, including Faculty Senate President. I worked within my department and across the entire institution to start initiatives that simultaneously increased diversity and student research opportunities on campus. -- Brought in over $500,000 in grant money to directly support students through scholarships and research opportunities. -- First faculty member to secure a grant to support undergraduate research in the science division at Alverno College. -- Collaborated to create the Center for Academic Excellence on campus. -- Designed and lead outreach courses for high school girls in Milwaukee to engage young women in science.

Sparked to learn more after reading a wine chemistry book cover to cover, I decided to see what else I could learn about the wine industry. As a retail provider of both domestic and international wines paired with great tasting education for employees, I went to work for Total Wine & More. The experience hand-selling wine as well as the insight into their unique alcohol distribution model was worth at least as much as the wage!

During my sabbatical at Georgia Tech I initiated and completed and independent research study utilizing metagenomic and metatranscriptomic data to describe the active microbial community at a deep sea hydrothermal vent. I translated the data analysis and computing skills I learned into curriculum for my students and undergraduate researchers.

Designed and executed molecular biology assays to detect respiratory pathogens in a variety of human samples. Summarized data and communicated with sales, customer support, and manufacturing to develop new clinical detection assays. Wrote and assured compliance with standard operating procedures.

Independently researched the microbiology and chemistry of anaerobic environmental samples using a wide variety of molecular and chemical analyses and culture techniques.
