ViaSat (NASDAQ: VSAT) provides satellite broadband services and secure networking systems for military and commercial markets. I joined ViaSat’s broadband internet access team to set up multiple data centers that supported a new satellite launch, and later contributed to a next generation new satellite launching in spring 2023. Project details: ► Served as senior engineer on team that stood up a new greenfield platform to support ground systems built to prepare for launch of the ViaSat 2 satellite. Represented team to other groups, mentored junior members, and managed technical escalations. • Traveled to a remote datacenter to install operating systems on servers via Foreman automation and configured systems to enable remote management. • Built hosts and modified PXE, preseed, and post templates using Foreman. • Installed cluster using Openstack Kilo Ansible playbook and created custom network interface templates.• Set up Openstack including Cinder and Swift nodes, user permissions, etc. and modified the Nova networking library. • Managed all Linux kernel and OS installer work. • Contributed to efforts to replace Openstack with a proprietary tool with responsibility for writing new Ansible playbooks for configurations, gathering requirements for additional configurations, and setting up 802.3ad active/active network bonding. ► Participated in full lifecycle for standing up an environment to support the ViaSat 3 launch. • Wrote a script for irq pinning in a cpu isolation configuration. • Adapted existing playbooks for the new environment.• Wrote a Redfish-based hardware monitoring plugin for sensu. • Created dkms driver packages for cutting edge hardware, including gpu systems. • Collaborated with team on full end-to-end automation for deployment of Kubernetes clusters.• Represented the compute team on efforts to resolve issues related to an in-house application crashing and experiencing performance issues.

At Sony Pictures I was part of a new team responsible for in-source thing company’s web presence and building a new environment from the ground up to support the primary site sonypictures.com and individual sites for films and TV properties. Project details:► Built and managed a new virtual hosting infrastructure from the ground up with hundreds of virtual servers in a high availability enterprise environment, including web, database, and application servers. • Set up a kvm/qemu/libvirt hypervisor environment, created base images for VMs, and wrote scripts to automate new VM deployment.• Designed and implemented a Chef-based configuration control and server management system and wrote cookbooks and recipes.• Arranged central syslog collection and analysis via third party services.• Designed and implemented monitoring plan using Circonus and Cacti, including custom plugins.► Worked with developers to set up an automated build service with Jenkins and CMS using Alfresco.► Set up a new highly-customizable WordPress environment for The Queen Latifah show that experienced unusual traffic peaks (e.g. contests, prizes). Built a multitenant WordPress environment for mulitple television shows.► Managed site deployments to support hundreds of film releases.► Collaborated with developers to ensure that production environment met needs and security requirements. ► Installed and configured RSA Data Protection Manager.

I was initially hired on a three-month contract to improve the performance and maintainability for a Nagios monitoring solution at CBS Radio’s streaming services, and based on the success of that project I took on an FTE role to manage a production environment. Project details:► Performed a deep dive into an existing Nagios solution to fix errors, write new documentation, and improve future maintenance capabilities. ► Established an automated build service with Jenkins to build from Git, package for APT(deb) or RPM, and add packages to appropriate internal repos.► Introduced Puppet to manage software deployments and server configuration and wrote deployment playbooks. ► Managed hundreds of Linux and Windows servers in a high uptime enterprise environment across multiple data centers. Oversaw migration to a new data center and a decommissioning. ► Wrote VBScript (using WMI), Perl, and bash scripts to automate systems work and information gathering.► Wrote a new monitoring solution for a black box radio ratings product that tagged audio for recognition by detection systems. The system was critical to maintaining the network’s radio ratings. ► Oversaw and wrote tests for the WhatsUpGold monitoring environment.

Media Temple provides web hosting and cloud hosting services. I was hired to create a new monitoring system to support thousands of servers and then contribute to infrastructure projects.Project details: ► Designed a new HA client/server monitoring system based on a Nagios event processing core.► Wrote documentation and training for the operations team in the new monitoring system.► Rolled out Puppet to automate configuration management of servers.► Modified MRTG to provide more detailed reports and monitoring for networks.► Created Perl modules, deb and rpm packages and repositories.
