Samuel M. Gebru is a social entrepreneur, community organizer, educator, advocate, and policy analyst with over 17 years of political and nonprofit experience in the United States and East Africa.He is the Managing Director of Black Lion Strategies, a social impact and public affairs consulting firm, where he works with a range of businesses, nonprofit organizations, advocacy coalitions, government officials, and others committed to social and economic justice and opportunity.     In addition to serving as a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Political Science in the School of Arts and Sciences, I am also affiliated with the Tufts University Prison Initiative of Tisch College (TUPIT), which offers college degree programs in prison to incarcerated students and on campus to formerly incarcerated students (returning citizens). After five years of schooling, TUPIT graduated its first cohort of incarcerated students in January 2024 who earned their Bachelor of Arts in Civic Studies. My students are in TUPIT's degree program at MCI-Concord, a medium security men's prison in Concord, Massachusetts, as well as on campus via TUPIT's MyTERN (Tufts Education Reentry Network) program, which places returning citizens in classes with traditional undergraduate students. This major accomplishment allows Tufts CTSI to continue to provide extensive services, resources, education, and mentorship to investigators across the partnership.Tufts CTSI was awarded a third CTSA in 2018 and a fourth in 2023.
