Job SummaryThe NGC R/V Sperry Star III Captain pilots and navigates the NGC research vessel and supervises the operation and maintenance of the vessel while at sea and in port.As captain, proficient to operate large and small marine vessels as required in the Chesapeake Bay and along the Atlantic Ocean coast, supervises the vessel’s crew, and oversees operation and maintenance of the vessel both at sea and in port. This position requires 24-hour availability while the vessel is at sea.Duties and ResponsibilitiesPilots and navigates an ocean-going vessel engaged in marine and aerospace product research.Supervises crew and oversees vessel and research operations on a 24-hour basis while at sea.Supervises crew in operation, repair, and maintenance of vessel while in port.Inspects the vessel for readiness, prepares gear, and plans routes.Ensures proper maintenance and use of survival equipment.Briefs employees, supernumeraries and customers on fire and other emergency procedures. Maintains charts and a variety of vessel logs and prepares required reports.Performs maintenance work on vessel.Provide for the safety and welfare of all persons aboard the vessel.Ensure vessels’ compliance with all applicable State and Federal laws.Scheduling, planning and coordination of vessel usageEnsure Federal, state and local Taxes and Licensing requirements.Ensure proper maintenance and upkeep of the vessel.Documentation of vessel usage, base configuration, and providing operational data to test users.Purchase supplies, equipment, and required services to support vessel operations.Establish, monitor and maintain vessel operational budget(s)Be a positive and helpful ambassador, representative, and face of NGC to the customer and NGC employees.Keep the Sperry Star III mission capable and ready for use during all scheduled usage times.Ensure complete customer satisfaction for testing and product demos performed on the vessel.

This includes both lab facility and factory-based services.The Environmental Capability provides a full spectrum of testing, services and solutions throughout the product life cycle by characterizing and subjecting products to extreme environments such as pressure, altitude, temperature, humidity, vibration, dynamics, shock, etc. Develops and executes project and process plans, implements policies and procedures. Responsible for continuous improvement in terms of quality, cost, schedule, and safety.Acquires resources for projects and processes, provides technical management of suppliers and leads process improvements.
