    1. Development of a new hybrid atom chip for the future experimentsHigh-quality periodic 2D magnetic lattice including square, triangular and honeycomb lattices is designed to replace the current magnetic lattice. It is constructed using magnetic nanostructure technology (e-beam lithography + reactive ion etching). The fabrication involved applying a mask to the surface of the DBC board and etching the copper away from the exposed areas leaving wire traces on the AlN substrate. Several prototypes have been fabricated for testing UHV compatibility and chip heat dissipation. The film was characterized by AFM and MFM measurements. 2. Wrote the journal paper which is accepted in a leading Physics journal Physical Review A (http://arxiv.org/abs/1312.3402).3. Developed mathematical models for the experiment using MatLab, Mathematica, Python etc.4. Assisted students in magnetic lattice project and presented reports at group meeting.
  • Swinburne University Of Technology

    1. Fabrication of hybrid atom chip• Designed hybrid atom chip to perform current magnetic lattice experiments and tested them using SQUID, AFM and MFM measurements. • The atom chip with the current carrying wires was produced using a micromachined silver foil technique. 2. Development of electronic, electro- mechanical and optical systems .• Built home made IGBT switches for fast switching(2-3 ms) needed for our experiments.• There are several control electronics used in my experiment. The rapid and concurrent switching (1-2 μs) in the current and magnetic fields is achieved through LabView graphical programming environment. • Designed and aligned the complex experimental set-up involving an ultra high vacuum chamber which encloses the hybrid atom chip, turbo molecular pumps, ion pump, getter pump 4 external cavity diode lasers and the related stabilization circuits, different switches, CCD camera, Accousto–Optic modulators, PDA detectors, polarization maintaining fibers, lens, beam splitters, quarter wave plates, half wave plates, polarizers, oscilloscopes, RF generators, power meter etc.• Designed and made telescopic arrangements for magnifying the atom clouds and to image them on a CCD camera.• The four external cavity diode lasers are locked to different transitions of rubidium using Doppler- free saturation absorption spectroscopy, frequency modulated spectroscopy, polarization modulated spectroscopy or AC locking mechanism. Spectrometer is used in the initial frequency tuning of the laser.• Fluorescence detection was used to measure the number of atoms • Absorption imaging to image the atom cloud3. Mathematical modelling of experiment was performed using Matlab, Mathematica etc.4. Achieved BEC in a 10 micron period magnetic lattice( http://www.swinburne.edu.au/engineering/caous/theses/Smitha thesis.pdf)
  • Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, India
    Project Assistant
Raman Research Institute, Bangalore, India Jul 2007 - Aug 2008
    Bangalore
    • Worked on a project "Building of Magneto Optical Trap• Built two external cavity diode lasers required to provide the resonant light for the trapping and cooling of atoms. They replaced the expensive commercial lasers and stable for a long time.• Made spectroscopic arrangements for the laser stabilization and performed laser spectroscopy measurements. • Built the special miniature current carrying coils to create magnetic field required to trap the atoms. Numerical calculations were performed to build the coils which produces the required magnetic field.• Experiment was first simulated using Mathematica and MatLab. • Achieved cold atoms in a Magneto-Optical Trap.• I was accustomed to using spectrometer, AOMs, PMT etc.
