Kier Natural Resources, Nuclear & Networks | Regional Civil environmental advisor on the Environmental Agency framework.

My role as Utilities environmental advisor supported the Kier teams on the South West Water, City Fibre and National Grid contracts across the South West. The role covered all aspects of the environment (waste, pollution, ecology) to ensure the company is complying with laws. I carried out watch and briefs for work, these have included vegetation clearance during the bird nesting season, destructive badger sett search and reptile checks. I worked well with different stakeholders and communicate with clients, the public, the delivery team and the other business streams. I carried out environmental audits and inspections of depots and sites including streetworks. I delivered mandatory environmental training and toolbox talks across the business. I completed environmental risk assessments and management plans and liaise with the environmental agency, Natural England and drainage boards. I have organized volunteer days. When projects are won, the team would contact me to visit the site and carry out any surveys needed ensuring the environmental risk is minimized.

Working as a seasonal field surveyor I have experience in bat emergence surveys, bat transect surveys and slow worm translocation.

In this traineeship, I completed multiple AQA qualifications, emergency first aid at work, safe use of brush cutters and trimmers, and cross-cutting and maintenance certificates. I have recently reduced my clientele to fit around the traineeship I’m doing but I still have 3 regular clients I work closely with to maintain their gardens in wildlife friendly ways. I also give advice and produce plans for those that want to introduce wildlife to their garden.

I carried out office duties including making flyers, general admin, helping clients with benefits. I organised and supervised youth clubs creating risk assessments for activities. I involved the children in outdoor activities and engaged them with the environment. I also worked in the cafe when needed serving hot drinks and food while maintaining a clean and welcoming environment. From October I left the charity and became an ad-hoc volunteer for events e.g Halloween party, roller disco etc.
