About Saurav Basnet, Phd
I have been seriously involved in various aspects of renewable energy research, starting my research journey in 2004 by designing and building a modified permanent magnet generator for a low rpm wind turbine with readily available materials in Nepal. For my Master of Science degree, I designed and tested a salient pole rotor for the Cessna single-engine aircraft alternator, and as a PhD candidate, my main focus was on residential demand management during peak demand events. I have worked on the effects of direct load control, dynamic pricing, photovoltaic devices, and wind turbines in a demand response program. I have also worked on forecasting peak demand and losses. My most recent recent paper, “An Artificial Neural Network-Based Peak Demand and System Losses Forecasting and Its Effect on a Demand Response Program,” received second prize at the 2016 Clemson University Power Systems Conference. Apart from demand response, I have also worked on microgrids, including designing a hybrid microgrid for a remote village in Nepal. Currently, I am working on clustering analysis to do predictive analytic analysis of demand management and optimization of reduced demand as virtual storage to enhance demand response. My six years of experience as an electrical engineer at Michael Baker International, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has involved working with the New York Department of Transportation, New York-Connecticut Metro-North Railroad, New Jersey Department of Transportation, and water treatment plantsin New York City. During that time, I learned to work with people from various technical backgrounds, andmaintained very good company-client relationships.
Listed skills include Engineering, Power Generation, Electricians, Power Plants, and 45 others.

Research Assistant - Residential demand response program and MicrogridPredictive analytics and Optimization− Predictive analysis of residential demand Management to form various clusters based on socio economic factors to estimate the level of residential participation, and thus the load reduction capacity available, from an electric demand response program during peak load events.− Optimization of residential participant’s clusters based on the demand reduction and profit generated for aggregator. Profit is based on the reward received from the utility, and incentive given to customers.Forecasting− Peak Demand and system loss forecasting of next operating day using Artificial NeuralNetworkEffect of demand response with direct load control, dynamic pricing and PV− Demand reduction program is designed to mitigate the peak demand. Direct load control, dynamic price control and residential PV are implemented in the DR for 2011 and 2030 case. 2030 case is based on the Clean Energy Act, California and 50% Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).− Carbon reduction analysis is based on the energy saved during the demand response event.− Economic analysis of PV based on the investment and benefits associated with reduction of demand and energy requirements.Case study and design of hybrid microgrid (PV-Storage-Diesel generator)− Off grid hybrid generation to fulfil the basic load requirements of remote village inNepal.− Optimal design and operation of two different combinations, PV-Battery-Dieselgenerator and PV-Pump Hydro Storage-Diesel generator.
