AMICULUM comprises a group of eight individual branded agency businesses, which deliver consultancy and value-added services to clients within the international pharmaceutical industry. During my time here, I expanded my expertise in supporting global medical communications teams through the development of strategic content for a variety of education and training programs. I also donned my consultant hat while at AMICULUM to help clients develop strategic resources, such as scientific platforms, and to develop overall strategy and tactical plans for the coming year. My professional growth included acting as a representative for AMICULUM at live pitch meetings and RFP bids and developments in leadership, team building, mentoring, and project management skills.

While I was beginning to build my freelance medical writing business, I spent over a year volunteering with the Manayunk-Roxborough Food Co-op. This experience provided an opportunity to grow my leadership and communications skills, while doing something that helped the community in which I lived. Although the food co-op did not come to fruition, the associated Pretzel Park Farmers Market still thrives in the community.

When I first became interested in medical writing, I contributed to Livestrong.com through Demand Media. I researched and wrote articles covering medical and general health topics for a lay audience.

As an emergency medicine resident, I worked in a team environment to coordinate care of patients with a wide array of presentations in the setting of a level one trauma center with over 100,000 patient visits per year. My goal as a physician was to help those with life threatening conditions and those in need of healthcare due to access issues. Although clinical practice was ultimately not a fit for me, my time as a medical student and resident provided transferable knowledge and skills that I use as a medical writer, consultant, and business owner.

Prior to starting medical school at Indiana University, I was awarded with a scholarship from Eli Lilly. This provided an opportunity to work as an intern at Eli Lilly. Because of my interest in endocrine disease, I was placed on the Byetta clinical team. This was my first exposure to working within the pharmaceutical industry, and I enjoyed the experience so much that this is still one reason I enjoy working with clients from leading pharmaceutical companies today. During my time at Eli Lilly, I learned about the drug development and regulatory approval process and completed a project in which we compared the efficacy and safety profile of Byetta to a competitor.

As a sales associate for Urban Chef, I improved my communication skills and learned how to build relationships with clients that led to repeat sales of products and in-home culinary services.

As a summer research fellow in neuropharmacology, I completed a research project that evaluated the potential role of serotonin receptor cross-linking in Alzheimer’s Disease. I also completed a literature review and presented an overview of my project at the end of the summer.
