About Steve Nagode

I’m a hands-on engineer and prototyper who solves problems and makes products and tools for industrial and consumer use. With over 20 years in the industry, I have a breadth and depth of knowledge in materials, processes, and engineering analysis to take something from idea to prototype to factory. My “figure it out optimism” combined with a commitment to safety and function leads to cool, creative and utilitarian solutions. As an experienced forensics and safety engineer, I analyze mechanical failures, recall issues, and injuries related to bicycles, climbing, sleeping bags, tents, and most other outdoor gear and clothing. I have created ASTM standards, and use EN, ISO, CPSC and other standards to evaluate and test products and materials. Testing produces objective, trustworthy results that can be used for product design, compliance, personal injury or class action lawsuits.Well versed in the processes of 3-d printing, Solidworks CAD, welding, casting and bonding. I think outside the box for creative problem solving and unique solutions. I value the synergy and brainstorming of teams and group think. I work best in a hands-on shop, and think best on my bike or on a trail. From complex issues to simple fixes, I thrive on staying open to all ideas and possibilities and bringing quality products to life. I’m also an avid outdoorsman committed to health and sustainability. My physical activities greatly influence the practicality of my design solutions and material choices. In my free time I’m hanging out my two kids or having mountain, trail, and mini-van explorations and outdoor adventures.

  • Rei
    Senior Innovation Engineer
    Rei Apr 2014 - Apr 2020
    Seattle, Us
Followed the Stanford D School Design Thinking Process: Empathize, Refine, Ideate, Prototype, Test. Starting with brainstorms and field insights, products were envisioned. Then prototypes - usable physical parts - were made using 3d printing (plastic, metal, and rubber), machining on lathe and mill, thermal and chemical bonding, sewing, casting (silicone, urethane, zinc, and aluminum), laser cutting, die cutting, waterjet cutting, plasma cutting, thermoforming, welding, and woodworking. We prided ourselves in the ability to turn out products in days versus over a month when designs were sent to the factory sample shops. There were times however when the factories did have the better tools or expertise and then we were able to be in their factories, collaborating with their designers and engineers to build prototypes. Project categories: Tents, luggage, camp tables, camp cots, e-bike frames, bicycle racks, backpacks, personal electric heating devices, camp and bike lighting solutions, and sleeping pads.
  • Rei
    Senior Design Engineer - Bicycles
    Rei Apr 2009 - Apr 2014

The focus was on bicycle testing, frame and component design, and accident analysis, for the REI brand Novara. Projects included the Zipper balance bike (a bike for kids learning to ride), the Afterburner trailer cycle (a single wheeled bike for kids that is towed behind an adult bicycle), and the Novara Barrow Cargo bike - with N-Dock.Was a mentor to two competent Engineers, supporting our gear teams (Packs, sleeping bags, Tents, and furniture), and Apparel (Outerwear, underwear, and active wear).

Contract/Consultant- Problem solved a design solution for sleeping stations for long duration trips to ISS and Mars- Started with a 1/10th prototype inspired by my skills from building tents- Created a full size operating lower body, low pressure, sleeping chamber.- Iterated refinements with the NASA development team- Built a full size, modified chamber to conduct clinical trials (successfully concluded March 2020)- Future projects in zero gravity testing- Current project is conceiving and prototyping a fixed gear exercycle for cardiac rehab patients
  • Rei
    Design Engineer
    Rei 2005 - 2009
    Seattle, Us
Worked with design teams to develop the best pack frames, tent frames, sleeping bags, and bicycles. The focus was on designing safe and excellent performing products.Specifically, I provided engineering calculations to optimize pack frame stiffness vs weight, ran annual wind tunnel testing trips to evaluate tents, created fill schedule calculators to make our down filled sleeping bags look and test great, and introduced European test methods to the REI bike line- Novara.
