At Meraki, I'm managing a team of software engineers focused on a new 20Gbps+ data plane and control plane for the Meraki MX and vMX appliances for cloud and on-prem security, VPN and SD-WAN. My team delivers features on a rapid (3-6 month) cycle and maintains a product-focused set of priorities: bringing new features to market, demo-ing new roles in middle-mile and edge markets, and making it easier for customers to manage and orchestrate their networks.Some of the things we accomplished last year: ◦ Launched the vMX-XL with an all-new "software ASIC" dataplane which brings market-dominant 10+ Gbps security and SD-WAN to cloud and virtual appliances ◦ Upgraded the security for new vMX nodes to mTLS when talking to the Meraki dashboard ◦ Gave customers a new tool to launch vMX in AWS with just a few clicks, straight from the Meraki dashboard ◦ Automated the creation and deletion of vMX for internal testing ◦ Some features that aren't publically available yet but soon will be!

I rode a motorcycle from the bottom of the South American continent to the top, while exploring the beautiful fjords and mountains of the western coast. Along the way I met up with some old friends and met a bunch of other cool folks riding motos as well. And yeah, there were a lot of unexpected hiccups along the way. Especially in Peru ... As line manager for a team of 8 Network Development Engineers, I had to establish a clear focus for my team and work to measurable goals on a year-to-year basis to improve network availability and effectively engineer the engineers out of day-to-day operations. Technical leadership was helpful but took a backseat to performance management and promotions, engagement between teams, and encouraging and driving people on the team to own and deliver on their projects.For example:· Fixed the engagement model between my team and a vendor to reduce TTR for vendor hardware tickets by an average of 3 days.· Scoped and led the effort across 2 teams to automatically translate detected network impact for the Direct Connect service into messaging on customers' AWS personal health dashboards.· Reduced the onboarding time for new engineers by 2 weeks and improved newcomers' learning experience by reworking the onboarding plan to follow a structured syllabus.· Wrote persuasive documents for leaders in the Direct Connect and AWS Network Security orgs on how to achieve a strict timeline for security patching on customer-facing routers without breaking customer resiliency designs.· Owned the operational response for all impacting events during Seattle business hours; which meant working with engineers to understand the outage, and then writing and presenting structured postmortems and making sure follow-up fixes were done across my team and other teams.· Hired and grew my team from understaffed (4 engineers) to fully staffed (8 engineers).· Promoted two engineers (one from NDE-1 to NDE-2, one from NDE-2 to NDE-3) by writing and defending their promotion docs.

I joined Amazon Web Services as a Network Development Engineer II (L5): focused on automation engineering and handling all day-to-day operational response, escalation troubleshooting and postmortems for the AWS Direct Connect service. This role required network protocol expertise (MPLS BGP overlay on a global service network), guts-of-the-platform troubleshooting at scale (Juniper and Cisco), and software design and automation (focused on writing automation workflows and integrating new features into existing Python and Java codebases).· Developed a novel method for scheduling and dispatching automated maintenance to customer-facing routers without harming individual customers' resiliency.· Automated the OS upgrade and configuration of a 500-router global fleet from a hands-on labor-intensive process taking 12 hours per router, to a hands-free process taking 2 hours per router.· Fixed novel customer network problems on a weekly (escalation on-call) basis and drove systematic improvements to the AWS Direct Connect dataplane from customer escalations.· Used continuous integration and code reviews to roll out changes safely to production network devices.· Designed, implemented and documented new signals analysis and automation workflows to improve the time-to-detect and time-to-repair for events.· Led the team sprint process to prioritize and ingest new work.· Owned the end-to-end lifecycle for problem escalations in the Direct Connect dataplane network, from identifying the root cause to developing mitigation and rolling out new configuration and software.

I spent 5 weeks in gorgeous Kyrgyzstan, joining a team of seven mountaineers via the Secret Compass adventure travel group to achieve the first-ever ascent (!!!) of a 4,787-meter (15,702-foot) summit. And we climbed two other peaks that probably other people climbed already, but hey -- one first ascent is enough!

I consider SECOM (a regional internet service provider in Colorado) my first "real" job, and it was a great opportunity to learn networking and practice real-world tradeoffs in network design and availability: I came in as a network technician and ended up participating in and eventually being responsible for 3 separate backbone upgrades and the rollout of ethernet backhaul, voice service, an all-ethernet BGP routing core, and many other supporting systems to provide services on a 2000-fiber-mile network.As the lead network engineer I:· Served as escalation contact for outages and customer issues.· Designed and coordinated the rollout of new routers, packet optical switches, optical network terminals; as well as datacenter services and software supporting both customers and business operations (VMware, Linux, etc.)· Wrote and integrated top-to-bottom resilient software stacks (frontend/PHP, backend/nodeJS+mySQL+C++) for datacenter and support systems.· Hired and trained a team of network engineers while the company grew from 5 to 75 employees.
