I was responsible for new business (sales), client retention, risk/safety compliance, training, claims management (broker claims advocate), safety program creation, Cal-OSHA citation and site-visit mitigation, accident investigation, EMR prognostication, policy renewal, continuing education for clients and prospects, light travel, client site visits and safety inspections, safety committee participation, accompany insurance carrier representatives on renewal site visits, on-site claim reviews with clients for all lines of insurance (workers' compensation, general liability, EPLI, construction defect, personal and business auto losses, homeowners, commercial property losses, cyber claims, employer liability. This was all the ultimate responsibility of the VP of Risk Management and Sales.

This is voluntary work I do at a local elementary school. HEROES is an arm of the PTO at Tustin Memorial Academy (TMA) which is a Blue Ribbon/Magnet/Lottery school in Tustin. HEROES stands for Helping Enrich the Resources of Every Student. I served 2 consecutive years as a Co-Chair and will be serving on the Executive Board for the 2013-14 school year and beyond as Publicity Chair. As new families come to TMA, my responsibility will be to share with them all the wonderful benefits of this school, the volunteer hours that are requested of each family, how CLUB365 works as a function of retaining our many non-district funded school programs. As the School Website says: "The TMA Dads group "H.E.R.O.E.S." (Helping Enrich the Resources of Every Student) is a parent volunteer organization of fathers at Tustin Memorial Academy. HEROES was created in 2003 through a combined effort of the school principal and interested fathers with the primary goal of increasing participation of TMA dads at school. H.E.R.O.E.S. events include Lunch With Dads events, volunteer reading in classrooms, Dads and Donuts Pumpkin Sale, after-work networking events, and our annual Jog-a-thon each spring.We welcome interested Dads to join us in this worthwhile and fun endeavor.This has been a great way for me to stay engaged and active at our school. I recommend this for anyone - working full time or not.

This book was written in 2002-03 with my ex-business partner and friend Gustavo Ortiz. There have been so many changes to California workers' compensation since that time that the book almost didn't make it to print. The book was published in 2006 and remains to this day an instructional guide for business owners. As often is the case, once an employee files a work comp claim, the business owner feels out of the loop and out of control. They feel they have zero input and 100% lost their voice in the entire process. That is the furthest thing from the truth. This book outlines best practices in staying connected to the injured worker, communicating with the adjuster, attorney, etc. Since 2003, my ultimate desire was in helping business owners confront things head on and to give them a peak "behind the curtain" so to speak. Not just in workers' compensation but running a business. Being a business owner is a lonely job. They are sometimes the last to get paid, have everything on the line and they can't quit.
