Professor Jordy Hendrikx (PhD) is the Acting Chief Executive and Chief Scientific Advisor for Antarctica New Zealand. He joined Antarctica New Zealand in 2022 as the Chief Scientific Advisor to support the delivery of world-class research and the communication of research findings. He is also a member of the Antarctica New Zealand and Antarctic Science Platform leadership teams and represents New Zealand at international forums, including COMNAP (Council of Managers of National Antarctic Programs) and ATCM (Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting).* Internationally recognised as a leading interdisciplinary cryosphere/snow scientist, with publications spanning from climate change impacts on snow, to avalanche forecasting, to hazard mapping to hydrology, to decision making science;* Experienced and strategic science leader, with demonstrated experience and success at project, team, department and program levels;* An extensive track record of managing and mentoring researchers, and supporting and facilitating research success; * Experience managing large operational and science budgets, and reviewing funding applications;* Extensive experience conducting research from the Arctic to Antarctic, with extended periods of time working in Switzerland, Norway, Canada and more than a decade in the USA. Prior to Antarctica New Zealand, he was the Director of the Snow & Avalanche Laboratory and a Full Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Montana State University, in Bozeman, Montana, USA. While at Montana State University he also served as Department Head for Earth Sciences, and the Director of Liberal Studies. He continues to serve as a Professor (Professor II) in Snow Sciences, in the Department of Geosciences, UiT- The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø.He has undertaken research on avalanches, snow, risk, glaciers and climate change from Antarctica to the Arctic. He has extensive experience working in North America, Europe, the Arctic, Antarctica and New Zealand. His areas of expertise span from detailed observational process studies, to leading large field campaigns, to risk analysis, to long term monitoring, to applied modelling. He also has considerable experience with applied research such as road avalanche programs, public outreach, national and international keynote speaker engagements, serving as an expert witness for litigation, and interacting with the media.
