Built strategies for the safe manufacture of frozen bakery products in a non-union privately owned company in order to increase productivity, optimize staff performance and contribute to building brand. Lean and Continuous Improvement tools and methodologies engaged the workforce to make better independent decisions. Going from paper/whiteboard to electronic data collection provided live performance data while facilitating efficient cross departmental communication and idea generation. Prepared annual capital plans to drive the implementation of many important infrastructure and equipment upgrade projects, introduced sales and operations planning and improved new product execution in the factory including customer data base management.

Mississauga

Responsible for the overall financial and operational performance and direction of the unionized beverage manufacturing plant and warehouses. Guided a restructuring strategy and plan that decreased maintenance costs, cut warehousing shuttle costs, reduced variable expenses, and slashed city effluent system charges. Installed an aggressive safety program to address vulnerabilities in hazard identification and correction, strengthening the impact of Joint Health and Safety Committee decisions.

Deployed strategic planning and lean business tools for two dairy (cheese) operations while managing 100 non-union employees and support staff. Introduced a Continuous Improvement culture to initiate KPI dashboards, idea generation and change management facilitation that directly improved product quality and performance. Established shop floor SAP procedures and related databases to reduce variances and improve performance. Launched initiatives for listeria control, product specification, and HACCP programs that established the plant as ready for a Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) audit. Implemented strong health and safety programs and training to create a workplace culture focused on safety-first, achieving a 95% decrease in lost time.

At Kraft, I managed a team of three Six Sigma Black Belt Engineers who achieved 10% improvement of controllable costs. In this 625K sq. ft facility with 8 continuous ovens and 17 packaging lines, I also oversaw programs for sanitation control and risk mitigation. Developed a productivity pipeline of $5.9M, personally accountable for delivering re-use box productivity, a 60 metric ton monthly solid waste reduction, and $37K in feed revenue. Deployed a 5S tool to improve sanitation compliance by 65%. Lowered risk to the company by outsourcing a confined space program producing a cost reduction of $150K annually.

During this period, I oversaw all operational departments for two fluid and aseptic milk facilities. I managed a $14M budget, tasked with standardizing best practices for manufacturing, distribution, HACCP and food/personal risk management. Commissioned the first Canadian Aseptic Certified Sterile Milk bottling operation, partnering with Nestle Canada in the development of 12 new long shelf-life products. Managed operations to multiple new benchmarks, increasing fill rates to 99.7%, improving on-time deliveries to 98.5%, increasing volume by 7%, and sharpening efficiencies by 8%.

First as Plant Engineer, I was responsible to design, install and commission all new processing and packaging lines. This followed to Packaging Plant Manager where I was responsible for all operations prior to distribution including manufacturing, supervision, maintenance and scheduling. Achieved 20% filling increases and 98.5% case fill rate. Led the plant to zero (0) lost time accidents and Level 3 ISRS safety system. Total Quality Management facilitator resulting in $250K scrap reduction. Designed, installed and commissioned 4 margarine filling/packaging lines worth $10M.
