Hands-on technical leader with experience in many domains. Among them: advertising, analytics, devops, infrastructure, fintech, education, e-commerce, bioinformatics, games, healthcare... I've worked with many different types of clients and companies (non-profit, academic, government, commercial, startup, unicorn, global, national, regional, local). I’ve managed teams across multiple time zones (nope, I haven’t had to deal with teams on other planets yet).Long history of excellence in technology and problem solving. First place nationwide in the American Computer Science League individual competition during my senior year of high school. Led my school team to fifth place nationwide during my junior year. This, in turn, led me to MIT... and that, in turn, led me down the road to my current career path.I'm a lot of fun to work with. Placed first in the Utah State Mountain Biking Championships at age 18. I was also a ski racer and instructor in college. I've played on the field at Candlestick Park and I've been swimming with sharks. I bring levity (and clarity) to a grim situation, I keep a cool head in a crisis, and I never lose sight of the summit. :)

Chief Technology OfficerPortobel, Inc. 2021 - 2022Portobel operated on a number of different levels... we were a technology company, a logistics company, and a transportation company. But the best way to really describe it is this: we built (and successfully scaled) a dynamic transit system for fresh and perishable food.We were *primarily* B2B. But since we also had direct interactions with consumers, the better classification was B2B/B2C hybrid. We experienced rocketship levels of growth in 2021, but 2022 was hard for the company due to rising fuel costs and a slowdown in venture capital availability, and unfortunately we ran out of runway and had to close up shop. Everything operated at a pretty fast pace, and this is how I like it.My primary responsibility was to scale our rapidly-growing engineering team and culture without letting it regress to the mean, so to speak. Our tech stack was pretty up-to-date, well-built, and we had damn good engineers. :) -
Software EngineerMeta 2020 - 2021Menlo Park, Ca, UsAt Facebook, my responsibilities included a mix of iOS development, back-end development, and data science. As part of my day-to-day responsibilities, I also designed and ran a lot of experiments. I was responsible for a project that increased department revenue by over $50M in the first half of 2021.My team’s specific focus was on in-stream video ads (those things that everyone loves to hate), but I was involved in a lot of cross-functional projects as well. -
Staff Software EngineerAirbnb 2018 - 2020San Francisco, Ca, UsIn this role, I was a full-stack engineer on the Analytics Products team at Airbnb, responsible for building out a new metrics and reporting tool for internal use. This tool was a critical part of the preparation work for Airbnb’s IPO in late 2020. Components of this tool may well be open-sourced in the near future.I worked with React and TypeScript on the front end, Python/Flask on the back end, and GraphQL to connect the two. I also worked on the Apache Superset data visualization tool, which originated in our team and was eventually open sourced. -
Co-FounderScalyr 2015 - 2018Mountain View, California, UsNote: In 2021, Scalyr was acquired by SentinelOne (NYSE:S) for $155M.Scalyr is all about identifying, extracting, and visualizing all of the patterns hidden in the noise of all the log files that are constantly being spewed out by all those servers out there. The company was initially backed by Google Ventures and other prominent investors. Scalyr’s first CEO founded Writely, which was acquired by Google and eventually became Google Docs. (He also wrote "Spectre", a classic Mac game from the '90s.)Among Scalyr’s core technological advantages: a data store built specifically for tracking and searching the information contained in log files, ruthless efficiency, advanced infrastructure, and an almost fanatical devotion to security.Ultimately, I'm a coder at heart, but I like to be well-rounded. I did a little of this and a little of that, filling in when needed on any given team and making sure that the team structure overall was heading in the right direction. I did a lot of front-end code, back-end code, and devops stuff as well. -
Engineering Manager, Software PlatformSigfig Aug 2014 - Sep 2015San Francisco, California, UsIn this role, I led the software platform ("splat") team. The team was responsible for site ops, dev ops, security, infrastructure, internal tools, and common libraries. Some of the tools and languages we used: Scala, Java, node.js, Ruby, Puppet, Docker, Consul. SigFig has infrastructure in multiple data centers, including AWS. I reported directly to the CTO.Brought continuous integration, continuous deployment, and industry-standard SCM processes to the company. Fixed a broken build and deploy process - replaced a manual, time-consuming, and error-prone process with a completely automated one. Implemented Git Flow, which greatly improved general code quality and simplified onboarding for new employees.Led the effort to pull common Scala code from different teams into a library that's now used across the company and forms the foundation layer for existing and future back-end services.Introduced cutting-edge tools like Docker and Consul. We used Docker to manage distributed builds, host internal tools, and provision development and test environments that closely match production. We used Consul for live configuration management and service discovery. Both of these tools played critical roles in our ability to scale dramatically and deploy new code more frequently in 2015.Mentor, architect, code reviewer – and chief battle commander, in case of downtime. -

Technologies used: Finagle (from Twitter), Thrift (from Facebook), Spring, MongoDB, Redis, Java, Scala, coffeescript, node.js, AWS2013 MVP (most valuable player, not minimum viable product!)Infrastructure projects leader. Greatly expanded the use of maven and jenkins. Key interviewer. Interviewed almost every engineering-related candidate – from intern-level to CTO-level. -

Lead Software ArchitectCimarron Software Jan 2005 - Feb 2010Houston, Texas, UsCimarron Software created laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for academic, commercial, and government clients. I was the second employee when this company started in 1996. It grew to a peak of 80 employees in 2003, then lost its main source of funding in 2004 and shrank back down to a skeleton crew (as low as 5 in 2005).I coordinated design and technology decisions - across the company and with our clients.Advised and directed project teams on design strategies and technical issues.Involved in many “first contacts” with potential clients to determine customer requirements, produce rapid prototypes and demonstrate how the product could quickly be customized with minimal coding.Introduced new technologies into the company and ensured that the company stayed current with the expectations of the marketplace on a technical level.Determined common needs across projects and worked to avoid duplication of effort across teams.Led an effort to develop an innovative, data-driven user interface that cut the average development time for a custom system by 80% and was still in production use (as of 2011) at a large, publicly-traded biotech company and within the NIH.Managed design/implementation of the largest project in the company’s history.Worked extensively with customers to manage integration with internal software development groups, as well as third-party software, robots, and sequencing machines -
