I received an Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship & Creativity (URISC) award on my research project "Experimental Investigation of Material and ProcessParameters on 3D Printer Energy Use". I worked with Dr. Karl Haapala as my advisor and Mr. Hari P.N. Nagarajan (graduate student) as my mentor. My work under this project was investigating various types of process technologies, process equipment, materials used in additive manufacturing (AM) by conducting a survey of available academic literature, and investigating energy monitoring procedures for the research, and then, conducting experiments on Fused Deposition Modeling machine FORTUS 400mc FDM 3D printer under supervision of my mentor. The designed parts were printed in the machine by varying the process parameters; build orientation, layer thickness, and raster angle. The data collected from the experiments in this research have assisted the graduate research assistant (my mentor) in creating models that support the development of a software tool that can predict AM process energy use based on design data.
