About Sofia Alfredson-Themudo

I am a junior at Upper St. Clair High School, class of 2026.I'm an eternal student seeking to learn more about the world in every way. My dream is to one day work in theoretical physics, at the forefront of science and the edge of the unknown world. There's nothing quite like the feeling of delving into a topic unknown to you, so I try to make that my everyday.I have a diverse range of interests, everything from particle physics to neurobotics, macromolecular science, astronautical engineering, and even archaeology or Egyptology. However, I am still most keenly interested in theoretical physics, particularly astrophysics and quantum mechanics. I primarily help with FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) teams at the high school, but I also am heavily involved in the development of other programs including SeaPerch, Drone Soccer, FIRST Lego League (FLL), FIRST Explorer, and many other introductory robotics programs.I help to manage the club by doing tasks of every type. I help to plan events, manage finances, fundraise, organize outreach, present at info events to potential members or donors, and so many other random things. I meet very regularly with the other leaders to bring complex ideas into existence and to lead the club ever-further to success and growth.

Our 2024 RLD attracted hundreds of visitors from all over the USC and Pittsburgh area.We organized twenty unique workshops that included everything from robotics to cooking, speech and debate, repurposing clothing, theater, photography, all sorts of art, and much more.

We also engineered a hanging mechanism and catapult launcher for our robot to best complete the challenges of this year's game, Over Under.I also serve as a strategist and strategic voice during the build and in competition. My role outside of the competitive season is an outreach manager.

It teaches critical and creative thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills.The topic for each competition is different, so over the years, we have learned about insects (qualifying problem 2022), mining (states 2022), antibiotic resistance (internationals 2022), the robotic workforce (QP 2023), throw away society (states 2023), currency (internationals 2023), Antarctica (QP 2024), autonomous transportation (states 2024), and various other topics for non-qualifying problems.We have reached out to the professional community twice, the first time to gain a deeper understanding of antibiotic resistance in bacteria from a doctor and the second time to learn more about economics and currency development from a professor of economics at Pitt.
