Hi, I am Sofia Biriouk I am currently completing my bachelor’s degree in astrophysics and minor of CMSE at Michigan State University. From 2021 to 2023, I was a professorial assistant researching supernova Type Ia and IIb, under the mentorship of Josh Shields and Wolfgang Kerzendorf. I used python programming to model supernova explosions, galaxy distributions, statistical likelihoods, and data collection and management. Along, with research I am an active member in the MSU chapter of Society of Women in Space Exploration, we host events on campus and talk about astrophysics, and CMSE research, and also have board game nights. In summer of 2023, I completed an internship with Holland Public Museum where I was the coordinator of STEAM learning activities in the Smithsonian Spark!Lab, this was a place for kids and caregivers to explore inventing and learning. In fall of 2023, I began a position was an undergraduate learning assistant at Michigan State University with the department of Computational Mathematics Science and Engineering. Introduction to computational modeling is a beginner level python based course. The course instructs students on how to use computer modeling and programming to enhance their own research or apply their skills in their own respective fields of study. I have continued this position in fall of 2024 and have enjoyed making a difference in the education of my peers.In the summer of 2024, I completed an internship with Jedco Aerospace. For this internship I completed tasks involving quality assurance of highly technical parts, drafting of metal fabrication processes, and data analytics and statistics to help improve the processes of the company and ensure that products were produced with highest quality. I am excited for future opportunities to expand my knowledge of computational science and looking forward to expanding STEM learning opportunities to underrepresented communities, through public education.
