About Sofia Celi

I am a dedicated cryptography researcher currently working at Brave, focusing on post-quantum cryptography, privacy-enhancing technologies such as Privacy Pass and PIR, and real-world applications of zkp beyond blockchain. In my role, I lead efforts to bring Private Information Retrieval (PIR) to production and make it practical, as well as develop TLS attestation leveraging zero-knowledge proofs (zkp). In the past, I also spearhead the development of the Off-the-Record (OTR) messaging protocol.During my tenure at Brave, I have contributed to numerous impactful academic publications and projects in the field of cryptography and privacy technologies. My work earned me the Distinguished Paper Award (DPA) at IEEE S&P 2023 and a finalist spot for the 2023 Pwnie Award. I have also played a key role in co-designing the OTR-mode, and have contributed to the development of syncv3 and Brave Talk, implementing several cryptographic algorithms primarily in Rust.In addition to my work at Brave, I serve on the Advisory Council at the Open Technology Fund (OTF) and as an Ombudsperson at the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), where I chair the Post-Quantum Internet Project and Human Rights Protocol Considerations (HRPC) Working Group/Research Group. At the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), I chair the Anti-Fraud Community Group, focusing on preventing online fraud.Previously, at Cloudflare, I led the migration of the entire infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography, ensuring future-proof security against quantum computing threats, and coordinated with the CTO to publish influential blog posts. I was instrumental in designing and standardising privacy-enhancing technologies like Privacy Pass and OPAQUE, and authored several academic publications that contributed to the broader field of cryptographic research.See my work here: https://sofiaceli.com/work/
