I ooze science, or at least that is what my principal told me 10 years ago when I was a novice teacher.Before I became a teacher I spent 10 years in biotech and I loved it! But during the recession of 2010 I was ready for a career change. In 2013 I got my teaching credential through Cal State East Bay and then spent 3 years teaching in public school. Then my mom passed away unexpectedly, and I left public school to teach at schools that specialize in working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, on the Autism Spectrum, and others. While working with neurodivergent students, I discovered that I am also neurodivergent (2E) as well as my mom had a diagnosis for adult ADHD. My current school, Park Academy, is phasing out the High School program (to offer more opportunities to students in elementary and middle school where interventions are so important), which I see as my cue to take what I have learned about supporting neurodivergent students back to the public education system. After all, I am neurodivergent and all of my education has been in the public sector, and it was because my teachers supported me that I have a satisfying career. It is my turn to give back. I like to think my mom would be proud of the journey my career has taken.
