Lancaster University’s BEE (Belong, Engage, Employ) Psychology programme was developed to help undergraduate students feel a part of the University Psychology community, as well as encouraging them to engage with opportunities in and outside of the department, ultimately enhancing their employability prospects. In my role as the BEE Psychology Ambassador, I was responsible for working with the programme management, assisting them with the planning, management and delivery of BEE Psychology events. This included the Psychology Employability Program (PEP), Brain Food sessions (lunch and learn sessions), and careers events. I also managed the BEE Psychology Instagram, which I used to promote forthcoming BEE activities to students within the psychology department and drive engagement. Student recruitment and promoting BEE activities and their importance to my peers, was a key part of the role which required good interpersonal and organisational skills. I also provided administrative support for senior staff where required, including collecting and collating feedback forms to ensure the program was meeting student’s needs.

As a research assistant I assisted Professor Stacey Conchie with a research project examining social processes, such as trust, in the context of social media. This project sought to answer questions such as: “Why do people continue to use social media despite beaches to their trust?”, “What form does trust take in the context of social media?”, and “What factors drive decision-making in the context of social media?” I was heavily involved in the study design phase of this project, working with other research assistants to carry out a literature search and create the materials for the studies.

As a Digital Transitions Ambassador I was responsible for writing, filming and editing content to share my experience of student life at Lancaster University for the "Ready for University" online course available to incoming first year students. My final video focused on student wellbeing, and I shared my top three tips for looking after your wellbeing whilst at University. I also took part in live Q&As to share my experience of studying at Lancaster and to answer questions from incoming students, while also acting as an ambassador for the University, promoting its ethos, opportunities and services and enhancing its reputation.

As a Children & Young People Ambassador, I supported the delivery of interactive learning workshops on topics such as Leadership, Teamwork, Democracy, Health & Wellbeing and Green issues. These workshops aimed to inspire and motivate local primary school pupils to become active citizens in their school and their community. In this role I also encouraged pupils to identify their personal qualities and strengths, and I emphasised the benefits of higher education to them. This role required excellent communication skills and an aptitude for explaining difficult concepts and key ideas in simplistic and creative terms to ensure that pupils understood the session content.

Think Pacific is a global charity which delivers volunteer projects within Fiji. During lockdown, I was fortunate enough to earn one of a limited number of scholarships for their Virtual Internship program, for which they had over 1,500 applications. I began my internship by learning about Fiji, self-leadership and how non-governmental organisations (NGO’s) support Fiji’s National Development Plan, through a series of online modules and by engaging in discussion with current NGO staff and fellow interns. This enabled me to deepen my understanding of the issues and concerns that affect the country. I then worked to develop a targeted social media campaign for Lifeline Fiji, a Fiji based mental health charity. For this campaign I created 15 weeks’ worth of social media content (including images, captions and infographics) which focused on suicide prevention and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health that could be posted to their social media. I then delivered this campaign to Lifeline Fiji and Think Pacific’s senior management team at the end of my internship.
