Sofía Paredes Maury has a BA in Archaeology, from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala (1992), and the degrees of Master of Arts in Museum Studies and a Master of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies from New York University (NYU) (1997-1999).She was Assistant Curator at the Popol Vuh Museum in Guatemala City; a William Fulbright researcher on Pre-Columbian Art and Collections Management at Duke University Museum of Art ("Ancient Americas, Africa, and Oceania"); a Consultant at Tikal National Park (Parks Interpretation, trails design, Public Use Plan and the design of a new museum with the pre-Columbian collection of the Museo Sylvanus G. Morley, under the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS); Subdirector of the Guatemalan Institute of Anthropology and History (IDAEH) and Field Coordinator of the Park’s Management Plan for Copan Archaeological Park in Honduras, with WCS and the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History (IHAH). From 2001-2007 she was Grants and Projects Officer at the Foundation for Conservation in Guatemala (FCG) and since 2007 she is the executive director of La Ruta Maya Conservation Foundation, an organization whose mission is the recovery and repatriation of antiquities that left the country illegally in past decades while promoting the dissemination of cultural heritage through exhibitions, publications and educational activities.As part of her MA Programs at NYU, she conducted internships at the Conservation Department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) for the Hall of Mexico and Central America. and the Department of Biodiversity Conservation for its programs in Bolivia and Mexico. In her professional field she conducted research on the looting of archaeological sites in rural communities and gum-extraction camps in the Maya Biosphere Reserve, Petén, with funding from the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies (FAMSI).
