I am currently conducting my capstone project at Legend Oak Rehabilitation and healthcare facility. My capstone project is focused on integrating music into dementia care within long-term care facilities, embarking on a transformative and impactful project. This capstone represents the culmination of academic learning and practical application, with a specific focus on enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with dementia through music therapy techniques. I engaged in comprehensive research to understand the therapeutic benefits of music for dementia patients, such as improving mood, reducing agitation, and promoting social interaction. Practical aspects of my capstone involve collaborating with interdisciplinary teams within long-term care settings to design and implement music-based interventions tailored to individual residents' needs and preferences. I will gain hands-on experience in assessment, intervention planning, and evaluation, honing critical skills for future occupational therapy practice.The final end product will be a guidebook for OT practitioners to help integrate music into their daily interventions. However, the guidebook will be beneficial for other disciplines such as SLP and PTs.

I had my fieldwork rotation at Integrity Rehab (Killeen west and Temple West locations) which is an outpatient hands setting. As an occupational therapy student at an outpatient hands clinic, is immersed in a dynamic learning environment focused on specialized care for individuals with hand and upper extremity injuries or conditions. In this setting, I gained hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced CHT and occupational therapists, learning to assess and treat a diverse range of hand-related issues such as fractures, tendon injuries, arthritis, nerve compression syndromes, and post-surgical rehabilitation. I actively participated in client evaluations, observing how therapists conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the impact of hand impairments on daily activities and functional abilities. They learn various therapeutic techniques including range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, sensory re-education, scar management, and custom splinting. I also engaged in patient education, empowering clients to manage their conditions, prevent re-injury, and maximize independence in daily activities.

I had my fieldwork rotation for 12 weeks at this skilled nursing facility. I worked closely under the supervision of licensed occupational therapists to gain hands-on experience and apply theoretical knowledge in a real-world setting. My responsibilities included conducting patient evaluations, observing and participating in therapy sessions, and implementing treatment plans tailored to each patient's needs and goals. I assisted patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, grooming, and eating, as well as with therapeutic exercises to improve strength, coordination, and range of motion. I learned to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, and physical therapists to ensure comprehensive care and optimal outcomes for patients. This fieldwork rotation provided valuable exposure to geriatric care, cognitive rehabilitation, and adaptive equipment, fostering the student's growth and competence in the field of occupational therapy.
