I was able to continue similar work from the previous summer in order to help design, plan, execute and analyze experiments regarding neuropathologies such as Multiple Sclerosis. Our main project was working with in vitro Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE) models. I was tasked with engineering and analyzing anti-inflammatory cytokines used for lymph node targeting. In order to do this I designed plasmids and coded for anti-inflammatory cytokines. I then transfected them into mammalian expression systems and characterized bioactivity in vitro on macrophages. I achieved the highest product yield from MAXI Prep in the lab and taught PhD students the protocol techniques I had used. I performed ELISAs and Gel Electrophoresis in order to purify proteins. I also assisted in evaluating the efficacy of engineered cytokines in vivo using the EAE model. I labeled and prepared samples for multiplex assays and always maintained detailed records of the experiments performed. All steps were taken utilizing sterile and organized techniques.
