About Sofia Šibanić

Welcome! I’m Sofia, Director & Principal at Veza Consulting, with a rich and diverse background in power system engineering. My career has seen me contribute to several electrical engineering sub-disciplines, including asset management, network operation, protection design, and power system planning.I leverage my skills to ensure superb planning of power networks, facilitating an effective decarbonisation transition and ensuring quality of delivered services for clients. My past portfolio includes:- Root-cause analysis of failed power transformers and earthing compensators- Development of network operation procedures, guidelines, and training materials- Audit of transmission power transformer strategic spares inventories- Creation of formal documentation outlining strategic spare management requirements- Development of project-driven protection system designs (brownfields and greenfields)- Development of long-term, short-term, and project-driven power system strategies- Development of decarbonisation pathways based on technical analysis of generation and networks- Power system studies for network and customer-driven works- Selection of primary & secondary electrical assets through technical and commercial evaluation- Power system planning to facilitate complex connections and review the technical compliance of facilities spanning several sectors and categories- Working group contributions to facilitate technical guidance on key industry regulationsI have a strong interest in power system simulation (steady-state and time-domain analysis), automation (especially through Python, for simulation and data analysis), and incremental innovation.I remain committed to ensuring my work produces safe, ethical, sustainable, and culturally sensitive outcomes. I continue to increase my value add by acquiring multi-disciplinary skills, engaging with other industry professionals, and staying up-to-date with new technologies & technical publications. In my off-time, I enjoy web development, programming, writing, reading, and gardening. • Horizon Power
    Senior Planning Engineer
    Horizon Power Jun 2022 - Apr 2024
    Perth, Western Australia, Australia
    - Developed an end to end process with detailed artefacts to facilitate complex grid connections.- Facilitated works to enable a multi-stage transmission scale power system connection (large load, synchronous generation) and coordinate its integration with a separate facility (solar farm and energy storage).- Prepared transmission development scopes for multiple large scale (order of GWs) projects.- Assessed scale and mix of renewables required to reach interim and long-term decarbonisation goals.- Developed a renewable integration strategy for the North West Interconnected System (NWIS).- Provided advice on technical and regulatory matters to access seekers.- Identified numerous power system modelling improvement opportunities, developed a central tracker and generated recommendations. This work initiated a program of works to pursue these opportunities.- Identified, assessed and managed numerous technical risks arising from project works.- Managed concurrent outsourcing of multiple large scale projects.- Programmed, tested and integrated an innovative automated study tool which can be scaled to a future self-service model.
  • Western Power
    Senior Planning Engineer
    Western Power Oct 2020 - Jun 2022
    Perth, Western Australia, Australia
During my tenure in this role I developed a strategy highlighting ten opportunities to improve utilisation of the transmission system in the SWIS.This strategy illustrated the costs, benefits and risks of each opportunity and highlighted significant potential for planning efficiency improvements.I also contributed to research and scoping for the development of a Wide Area Monitoring Scheme which would be deployed at major transmission nodes. My work in this role concluded with significant transient studies to analyse power system behaviour and security during low load periods. This work was presented to engineering stakeholders at AEMO and created an automated capability to reassess system impact as SWIS daytime demand continues to decline due to DPV uptake.
  • Western Power
    Protection Engineer
    Western Power Jul 2019 - Oct 2020
    Perth, Western Australia, Australia
I wrote Protection Planning Reports for the integration of a >30MW transmission generator connection, installation of replacement statistical metering infrastructure, and system wide replacement of Under-Frequency Load Shedding protection assets.I undertook protection calculations for interim supply arrangement and replacement of a 132/22kV 33MVA power transformer which was successfully integrated into a complex brownfields site with legacy interlocking arrangements, critical fault clearance time considerations and unique requirements for flexibility in operational reconfiguration.I undertook detailed technical market analysis to scope, compare and bench test products to replace ageing feeder statistical metering infrastructure, which resulted in low cost integration. This infrastructure now directly provides operational visibility of power flow on hundreds of medium voltage feeders, enabling data driven understanding of network power flows and further integration of DER.For a unique pumped hydro project, I defined the protection requirements which would ensure safe operation of the network in both islanded and grid interconnected operating modes. This was a rewarding experience, with significant cross functional collaboration to define engineering requirements for this facility.
  • Western Power
    Planning Engineer
    Western Power May 2017 - Jun 2019
I conducted power system studies for numerous connection projects across transmission and distribution networks.Customer connection projects included a variety of generation, load and integrated facilities, ranging from <1MW to 200MW. Generation connections included solar, wind, synchronous and hybrid facility types. Load connections spanned multiple sectors including essential services, mining and federal departments. In collaboration with our regulatory specialists I provided engineering advice on the application of generator performance standards to existing facilities, informing transitional pathways for generators to meet Technical Rules (grid code) compliance requirements.I also engaged in development of both strategic long-term options for multiple load areas, as well as developing Works Planning Reports for specific projects, such as the installation of a new 132/22kV transformer at Picton and the return of a 220/132/34.5kV transformer back to Merredin.I conducted a risk based analysis of potential overloading on a 132kV transmission line, informing options for managing the overload and providing options to key senior management.During my time in this role, I collaborated heavily with team members, Customer account managers, design engineers and operational staff. I found mentoring graduate engineers in the team very rewarding and continue to advocate for knowledge sharing in all my roles.
