About Sofia Vougioukalou

I am a social gerontologist with a background in medical anthropology, user-centred design and evaluation. I am also a British Academy Innovation Fellow researching creative ageing and social prescribing and preparing policy recommendations in this field. I also work on a wide range of projects on health inequalities in ageing such as dementia care in hospitals, macular degeneration community care, cycling uptake and the management of communicable diseases. I am a member of the leadership team of the Wellbeing Research Network of the Wales Institute for Social and Economic Research and Data (WISERD) and a member of the All Wales Deaf Mental Health Group. My research programme has been awarded the 2023 Highly Meritorious Contribution Award by the Ethnic Minority Welsh Women's Association (EMWAA), the 2022 Celebrating Excellence in Civic Mission award from Cardiff University, the 2021 Dementia Friendly Wales Diversity Award from Alzheimer's Society Cymru and the 2021 Public Involvement award by Health and Care Research Wales. I support scholarship in arts and health as a member the Arts and Health journal editorial team.I have experience of co-production in healthcare settings using Experience-Based Co-Design, Appreciative Inquiry, Participatory Action Research and Participatory Rural Appraisal. My research contributes to the evaluation and foundational understanding of the integration of lay and experiential knowledge into health service improvement for long-term conditions. I use approaches of medical and organisational anthropology such as ethnographic and visual methods to understand service user and service provider experiences. I use patient and public involvement and engagement to identify culturally-appropriate ways to engage service users in research, service improvement and impact-generating activities. My goal is to contribute to the delivery of speedier inexpensive innovation in health and social care services through engaged research.

I am the academic lead for patient and public involvement and engagement in a large study on dementia care in hospitals funded by the National Institute for Health Research. I lead a programme of research that uses innovative creative methodologies to accelerate the unique potential of public involvement in the transformation of public services. I am also principal investigator in a study looking at dementia and diversity with an emphasis on stigma, intersectionality and health inequalities. My research includes collaborating with artists and patient champions to identity and test visual methodologies that might amplify qualitative data collection on hard-to-express experiences of chronic illness; and consequently examine the applications of visual data in quality improvement and clinical teaching.
