Business development in automotive, mobility, and transport.

Leading Business and Innovation Area Mobility - one of six cross-functional business and innovation areas - to develop new business with customers and partners to contribute to the RISE vision - a competitive business community and a sustainable society. The role comprises both business development and driving strategic partnerships and agendas with external partners, and leading the five focus areas in Mobility, to drive development of internal competence and expertise to meet future demand from our partners and society. Our Mobility area covers technologies regarding vehicles and machines, fossile free propulsion, production and manufacturing, automation, as well as transport and mobility service business models. Our projects range from applied research to early development and testing.

In this role, I was driving one of the Volvo Group Strategic IT Priorities, to accelerate efforts driving innovation in the Volvo Group Process & IT community through establishment of innovation culture and ways of working. This included developing communication material (written, presentations, film clips), holding seminars and presentations for departments and on innovation days on innovation and creativity, facilitating workshops using creativity (design thinking) methodology, and being part of the ’Introduction of new technologies’ work group in Group IT.

Coordinating material for Volvo Group Quality Board, and Volvo Board reports on quality and customer satisfaction.Continuing tasks relating to innovation community @ Volvo Group, innovation strategy for Volvo Trucks, and technology specialist training from previous position.

In this role, my work comprises two different areas: 1) development and execution of Volvo Group processes related to setting and managing the Group Trucks Technology Development (TD) portfolio; 2) implementation and improvement of the Volvo Group innovation process and innovation organisation, including innovation strategy and KPIs with Volvo Trucks.

As the position was newly created when I started, much focus was put on development and implementation of the Volvo Group mid to long-term technolgy plan and associated business processes, by, in collaboration with various stakeholders, identifying needs, securing roadmaps and R&D project budget, including external research commitments, within Technology Area Supply Chain. This included portfolio management, as well as coaching of and support to program leaders, to enable them to deliver strategies, program roadmaps and draft and prioritise program portfolio budgets, according to the annual time plan. I also coordinated the cross-functional, monthly technology area steering committee meetings.

Responsibility for long-term development in the area of logistics and fleet management systems. Work tasks included project management and providing a logistics perspective on new service development for future trucks, and pitching ideas for new service development to the Volvo Group market companies.

This position included project and program management in areas as diverse as method and process development regarding the company’s academic research project collaborations, conceptualising a new IT-based service for finished vehicles factory yards, incorporating logistics aspects in a lean production system philosophy, and developing a theatre play showcasing for intelligent goods in the automotive industry for the World Congress on Intelligent Transport Solutions.Other responsibilities included representing Volvo Logistics in both internal Volvo Group and external forums that focused on logistics research and development. In this role, I had functional ownership of the external research collaboration process and implementation of the process together with business development functions.

The job comprised developing and analysing business and market intelligence of competitors, as well as customers and their logistics networks to support the company’s own service and product development. Contacts with regional offices across the world were made on daily basis, and presentations of the analyses were made in the different regions.

The work tasks included marketing and selling project ideas through customer contacts, quotes and research applications; managing project budgets and the execution of both commissions and research projects; making analyses and writing reports, presenting projects at industry conferences, etc. From 2005, the work included responsibility to coordinate the company’s research project portfolio for goods transportation, driving the work to initiate new project ideas in relevant research calls.

My licentiate thesis consisted of three different papers, all related to the overall topic of how an intermodal road-rail transport systems for express transport services, based on the functions in such a system, should be organised to match core logistical requirements and make the system trustworthy among logistics service providers.

The job included a project to set up and implement the manufacturing module at a steel plant, including interfaces to the plant's other IT systems.
