House Advisors serve in an important role, as part of thecollege administration and working alongside house governments to improve the residentialcommunity. As a research assistant to Professor Laura Shelton in the history department, I aided her in collecting relevant primary documents for her book manuscript. This summer, I was tasked with transcribing 19th-century paleography from maternity ward records in Guadalajara as well as judicial records of infanticide and sexual assault cases in Jalisco. I summarized important details in mid-20th-century nursing theses that coincided with the professionalization of medicine in northern Mexico. Lastly, I discussed with Professor Shelton the ways in which these documents inform us about the role of midwifery in local politics, the economy, legal medicine, and medical education.

York Fresh Food Farms is an Urban non-profit farm in downtown York, Pennsylvania with the mission of eliminating fresh food deserts in the city as well as making fresh food more financially accessible to vulnerable communities. As a farm hand, I routinely helped harvest fresh vegetables, plant seedlings, and properly log and prepare all produce for markets. Additionally, I assisted the team with running mobile markets at numerous locations in downtown York. At the markets, I ran the cashier as well as educated customers on ways to use different produce in order to help them feel more comfortable with eating fresh in-season vegetables and herbs.

As a part of my Hackman fellowship, I worked with Professor Shelton on her book Midwives and the Making of Modern Medicine in Provincial Mexico. As her research assistant, I reviewed and gave feedback on her first chapter about social medicine and midwifery. Additionally, I worked with primary court documents about medical malpractice by interpreting the paleography, translating it from Spanish into English, analyzing the content, and then ultimately synthesizing the key information from the trial. Lastly, I examined medical legal treaties that discussed the intersection of law and medicine during the late 19th century while states in Mexico were undergoing national education reforms in the fields of medicine and medical law. In these readings, I extrapolated information relevant to abortion, infanticide, incontinence, assault, and rape which will be used in other chapters of Professor Shelton’s book.
