To whom it may concern:
I am writing this letter of recommendation in support for Soham Apte for a position in your organization. I am a Bioinformatics graduate student and Biology laboratory instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University, where Soham attended my Biology 151 Lab Section during the fall of 2018. He did an outstanding job as my student, and I wish I could have continued to work with him the following semester in Biology 152.
The laboratory that Soham completed focused on introducing students to the process of science, with emphasis on logical experimental design, posing testable scientific hypotheses, and drafting scientific reports. Soham excelled in each of these areas.
While I worked with Soham and other students to provide an overview of each long-term project’s technical details and requirements, Soham consistently went above-and-beyond in his writing and effort to communicate his experimental findings. He received high marks on the final drafts of each submitted report. Whenever he encountered challenges, he was able to find answers through his superb communication skills. He frequently sought me out tried to take scientific discussions we had in class to a highly technical level.
The core task Soham completed during my course focused on designing and conducting his own biological experiment. As part of this project, Soham was responsible for posing a testable question, conducting extensive background research, designing a method for data collection, recording a rich data-set over a period of 2-3 weeks, and composing a comprehensive report. To demonstrate the results of his experiment and explain its potential implications, Soham presented his work with a classic 3-panal poster during the final day of class, akin to what might be seen at a high-level undergraduate research conference.
In closing, I’d like to point out that in addition to being unusually intelligent, Soham demonstrated a high degree scientific curiosity during my class. He frequently reached out with questions about how to get involved with a scientific mentor and was the very first student out of the 60 undergraduates I taught who expressed interest in finding and working alongside a long-term scientific mentor on the MCV Medical Campus at VCU – something that very few undergraduates even attempt until late in their college career. He consistently treated me with respect. I believe that he would be an asset to any organization that he joins in the future.
