I am a game design and cultural heritage expert, with additional skills in game art, UX and storytelling. I started work in video games at Sony Computer Entertainment’s London Studio before making a career-defining detour into figurative oil painting. The unusual mix of game art and classical art eventually inspired me to author internationally recognised books, which explore the overlap between classical art (gestaltung) and video games. Both books adapt traditional art, design and storytelling practices to game and interaction design—staying faithful to crafting methods of the past, while adding a deep understanding of the player’s structural role in the experience. My latest work builds on the first two books by focusing on game design—the mechanics and structures of how games work—and answering the following questions:• What if empathy, not conflict, was the organising principle of game design?• What expressive qualities do video games have that we inherit and surpass from traditional arts?• How can game design convey intangible culture and tradition?• In the age of A.I., video games and the metaverse, how can we playfully reconnect with the tactile world around us?• What role does paper prototyping and “body-storming” play in the development process for digital games?• How do game mechanics affect the player’s body and emotions for artistic effect, and how can we use this knowledge for self-expression and digital empathy? To these aims, my method touches on the topics of sensory design, digital empathy, HCI, and embodiment, and avoids typical conflict-based game mechanics. My work has been described as gaming’s equivalent to Joseph Campbell’s universal storytelling structure, and Robert McKee’s screenwriting classic 'Story.' My first two books are endorsed by the likes of award winning Hollywood director Marc Forster, and 'Assassin’s Creed' founding member Stéphane Assadourian. I have had the pleasure of presenting at the Smithsonian Museum’s landmark 'The Art of Video Games' exhibition, Disney Research, SXSW and Google, to name a few.

Game Design Lead FacilitatorTales Nov 2023 - PresentZurich, SwitzerlandI served as a lead facilitator for the 'World of Us Game' (WOU GAME) by Tales—an upcoming digital adventure world for children that encourages curiosity about the world through positive interactions and play. I remotely led the Eco-Myth Lab, which invited designers from around India to develop mini-games that explore and preserve various Indian cultures. Participants came to the lab with little or no experience developing games, so it was important that they received a holistic understanding of the game development process. For this purpose I taught my 'Kinesthetic Time Capsules' method with the goal of ensuring that empathy, not conflict, was the guiding design principle of each project. I'm incredibly proud of the projects that emerged (TBA), which delivered sensitive game design solutions to physically and emotionally activate players in connection with cultural artefacts and Indian mythology. Each participant delivered professional-grade game design document, illustrating key design pillars, game mechanics, gameplay loops, etc. The WOU GAME is still in development but more info can be found here: https://www.worldofus.info/ and https://talesofus.com/ -

AuthorCrc Press Jan 2016 - PresentZürich Area, Switzerland'Interactive Stories and Video Game Art' defines the artistic language of video games and demonstrates how classical art principles and storytelling affect the entire development team's ability to orchestrate emotionally-rich interactive stories."The convergence of narrative in film, video games, and virtual reality will fundamentally change the entertainment industry in coming years. Chris Solarski’s book gives content creators crucial insights into interactive story composition and how to adapt these concepts for transmedia storytelling."―Marc Forster, Film Director and Producer incl. Monster's Ball and World War Z"Chris Solarski's book is extremely ambitious; from the smallest detail to broad concepts that encompass an immense scale, its truly applied methodology serves as a catalyst that enriches the reader's heart and promotes the creation of pure art."—Erik Anzi, Producer, Screenwriter, and Concept Artist on films incl. Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner"The clever thing about this book is that it bridges the worlds of game design and storytelling. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get into game design and understand what’s going on beneath the surface. It reminds me of Robert McKee’s Story, the classic book on screenwriting. You read it and you think: Aha, this is how storytelling works in film, it really can be explained! And you can see this book as a companion volume that is essentially doing the same thing for games."―Tom Standage, Deputy Editor and Digital Strategist of The Economist and a New York Times Bestselling Author"As a gamification designer you look for inspiration from multiple sources to create behavior-change and evoke emotions that help your audience make decisions. Chris Solarski captures brilliantly how dynamic composition techniques for transmedia storytelling can assist in reaching your audience through shapes, flow, positioning and much more." ―An Coppens, Chief Game Changer at Gamification Nation Ltd. -
